Chromey/Porcupine tree lovers.

yup yup

also check out Stupid Dream, and Recordings is great as well..

of course everything is great, but i recommend starting with Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun

you may get a lot of recommendations to hear In Absentia, the newest, its good, but not as much so as the prior albums.

ever since In Absentia came out, they've seemed to have finally started getting more recognition, having a lot to do, i suppose, with Steven Wilson (PT frontman) getting involved with Opeth, so their name is getting out. And its about time too. They've got a good number of albums, been around since the early 90's

should I bother prdering tickets to see them in july w/opeth......costs 35 bucks cdn

thats like....20 bucks for you

worth it?

I would suggest their latest albums, from Signify up, because I think in the beginning, they were searching for their sound and still growing in songwriting ability. But they matured on Signify and have continued that trend. Stupid Dream is my personal favorite, then Signify, then Lightbulb Sun, and then In Absentia. All of them are great though.

The one that got me into it was: Stars Die. 2 disc album.
Especially if ya never heard of them, you get plenty of variety to
choose from. As with all good things, i didn't really like them at first, but
something made me change my mind.. whaha!!

-x-
Iris.

yeah I've heard great things about signify, how its the turning point of their career, and contains great elements of their past sound, and bits of what they became.... but its one i've barely listened to, because I don't own that album.. I really need to find it.

I'm coming in late here but concur with most all the recommendations.

Lightbulb Sun or Stupid Dream to start.

obviously, if you are into nothing but blastbeats you are not going to like this band. but if you are at all open minded, or if your mind has been opened by psychedelics, you will see the beauty of Wilson's music immediately.

I would say, as a general rule, start from the most recent cds and move backwards. Read the discography on the website carefully because many of their cds are reissues of old material.

if you like the above mentioned cds and In Absentia, you can sample the older material by buying "Stars Die," the two disc retrospective that Iris mentioned (hihi!!!).

if you like the new Opeth - Damnation, you have a pretty clear idea as to a major type of PT music, not surprising because Steven Wilson's fingerprints are all over that CD. I would think the PT/Opeth tour will feature band members visiting each others' sets, especially since they've formed such a mutual admiration society.

, i suppose, with Steven Wilson (PT frontman) getting involved with Opeth, so their name is getting out.

I would say that signing to Atlantic has more to do with there name getting out. But anyways, Stupid Dream is a very good album. I'd start with that one.
