Classics Reborn

The best bit is I think he's far enough removed from everyone else to almost get away with whatever the hell he wants to say without too many people arguing. I can't see people lining up to debunk his stories because I can't see enough people giving a shit that he is embellishing the truth...oops I mean telling the utter truth and nothing but the truth.

Geez Gene looks different, he almost looks like that ex-Slayer guy!

No more crazy eyes in this one....I didn't know that Glen Hughes was ever in Exodus but there he is on the right with Gary's arm on his shoulder.

Gene's always been my favourite drummer...even when he looked like Dave Lombardo :)

Yeah but if I can't see them they have no power over me!!

Although we often talk about the dull years of metal there really has been a lot happen since 98 or 99 when that photo of Testament was taken.

Even some of the dull spots were history worth remembering at times. I don't know that metal needed the dull years to come back stronger but with bands like Testament, Overkill, F&J etc I think the dull time helped them to become even stronger for when things started to pick up again.

Well the dull spots for me were at least a decade long and I shall not appreciate them! :p:saint: I will however celebrate the few bands like Testament, Overkill and Flotsam that kept the flag waving. Those were my only bright spots and got me through the Nu metal and alternative garbage that flooded too much time.

Oh you don't have to appreciate them, but remember the good that came from them :)
As much as Testament etc kept the flag waving I also think there was a time when all those bands needed a slap around the ear to wake them up too. They might not have succumbed and created a "black album" but some of their output also wasn't as good as it should have been.

Haha yeah it's true. For me out of the bands I followed only Testament really kept it up. Flotsam had some that could have been faster or better in various ways. Overkill remained fairly heavy and fast but lacked a lot of quality songs imo. Megadeth lost a bit of nut. Exodus folded.
Testament only slowed down because of Chucks cancer. But they crushed it throughout the 90's.
Thankfully all the other bands have turned it around...except Metal Church.

Yeah I guess Testament did kind of stand out, they had a few releases during the dead years but they were still fairly solid and true to the music. F&J for me were not as solid, their late 90's albums are not ones I go back too that often. That's not to say they aren't good, they just aren't goto albums for me. While I applaud Overkill for their output and effort I think they suffered a bit after I Hear Black and right up to The Electric Age. It wasn't that they were producing garbage, more so that it appeared almost like they were fulfilling a contract and not putting 100% into each song.

The whole Megadeth thing still has me baffled. Nick and Jnr have blamed Dave for the change and they have blamed the label for forcing Dave to change. I don't really know who is at fault, although I wouldn't have thought Dave would be dictated too like that, but there is several years of Megadeth that should not have happened.

If any band needed a rest in the 90's it was definitely Exodus, god knows what we'd have got if they followed Force Of Habit immediately!! Kreator were the same, when they went to industrial metal they sucked badly. Sodom was not as bad but they dipped in the mid years too.

I do however think that with so many of the earlier bands not producing as much, not producing as good, or just not producing, it gave more space for other newer bands. Bands like Warbringer, Power Trip, Municipal Waste helped bring thrash back and then some of the older bands came back with them.
