College Football Thread

Actually, I can't even say cuz I've never seen them play. I haven't seen Louisville either but I heard they are seriously good. Doesn't matter anyway. I'm pretty sure Michigan and OSU will play in the national championship. I thought UT had a shot until their starting QB got hurt and they blew it last Saturday against LSU.

If Florida wins out, it will be OSU/MU vs Florida I bet.

You've got to be kidding me. Well, if they can beat Louisville, they can beat WV. I guess Rutgers isn't as full of shit as I thought.

They're real.

Not according to my buddy, Rutgers is just an average team getting lucky.

Your buddy is a fucking idiot. The Rutgers team taking the field these days is completely different from the team taking the field even LAST YEAR, and they had a winning record last year. Rutgers is now a legitimate contender in NCAA football, and nobody can deny it now. Louisville did NOTHING in the second half of the game. And Rutgers is only going to get better. They're a very young team. Freshman and sophomore wide receivers, and Ray Rice is a sophomore too. The only key element leaving is Brian Leonard, who will be missed but is not irreplaceable. Now with national attention, we'll only be getting even better recruits. Schiano is the real deal. He turned a nothing team into a powerhouse with one of the best defenses in the league and a Heisman contender running back who's only a sophomore. And the most important thing about the team is their passion. Rutgers is renowned for sucking, so this really is quite a phenomenon, and they want to see this through.

His Argument:

1) Rutgers have only played average teams the entire year, bearly winning.
2) One win over a better team does not make them the better team.
3) The talent of Rutgers is no where near the talent of the OSU, Michigan, Texas, Oklahoma
4) With two flukes, West Virginia and Louisville, and they end up making it into a BCS game, they will get dominated because of talent.
5) Talent can over come a great scheme in college football.
Therefore, Rutgers are Average.

His Argument:

I agree with this argument. It's not like Rutgers is in the Big Ten or the SEC. I admire their persistence but it's going to take a couple years of undefeated seasons to become legitimate...and then a move into a more powerful conference. Reminds me a little of Vanderbilt. They dominated whatever shitty conference they were in and then moved up into the SEC, where they get beat down every Saturday.

Nobody's saying that they're in the upper echelon of college football teams. Nobody's saying that they're pulling for the BCS championship game or anything. Even they know they're not on that level. But this season, and beating Louisville, wasn't some massive fucking fluke. They're a quality football team, and people don't seem to want to give them that.

OH you're kidding me! That's awesome! Also
Arizona > Kalifornia
damn I love an upset

I wouldn't say they're average. They're definitely a quality team but I agree with that dude's assessment that beating one great team by a field goal does not instantly make Rutgers great. That's the problem with football - it doesn't allow for much statistical relevance. For example, if Rutgers and Louisville played a best of 5 series, Louisville would beat them the next four games straight.
Rutgers's situation reminds a little of Boise State. They're (Boise) are an awesome team but are too small to be considered with the greats like OSU, Michigan, Florida. However, you don't see anyone complaining that Boise State doesn't get any credit - and they go UNDEFEATED every season

I don't think it's fair to say so confidently that Louisville would take a best of five series. I think Rutgers would actually have a good chance of taking it at least 3-2. Sports Center was actually talking about Rutgers last night, saying that they would actually take Rutgers overall against Florida.

Just out of curiosity, would you guys even know where Rutgers was if you didn't go there/live in NJ? I mean, there's an obvious bias coming out of every one of your posts. Rutgers aren't as awesome as you wish them to be. End of story. If they go to the national championship and beat either OSU or Michigan then I will happily eat my words. In the meantime, I wish them luck against WV.

Considering the Big East has only 8 teams and 3 of them are top 25 (all of which may be in the top 10 this week), I wouldn't say its an incredibly weak conference.

Well, that's an interesting point and I'll give that to you but realize it could also mean that there are three strong teams and five inceredibly weak teams - which is most likely the more reasonable answer. Consider the NHL division that the Red Wings and Predators dominate. Compared to most other division leaders they are average, but they rack up incredible amounts of points beating up on Chicago, Columbus, and St Louis, three of the worst teams in the league.

Nobody is saying that they're one of the top teams in college football. I already said that. They don't have the strength of schedule for that to be proven. But they've still beaten everyone that they've come against, including what was number 3. I don't think that they're "awesome," I'm just excited that such an amazingly shitty football program has been completely turned upside down and is now ranked 7th in the nation. And yes, I would know Rutgers if I didn't live in New Jersey. It's one of the first colleges ever built in the country, played the first college football game ever, and has the best philosophy department in the english speaking world.

Rutgers actually has a better reputation out of state than it does in state. Here it's seen as a safety school whereas for out of staters its seen as a pretty top notch institution. Considering it has some studly ratings in both undergrad and grad departments, I'm surprised people think its a low profile place.

Its football program is obviously another story. It can't be denied that it's turn-around in terms of quality is probably the most impressive college football story this year. This is the kind of stuff you could make a pretty good movie about. As long as this momentum continues, I think Rutgers could become a perennial college football powerhouse.
