ok, if you really need a topic: do you think mankind's ever gonna leave this planet and colonize another or we'll die off before it happens?

rahvin.

I think it will start to happen when we've so completely destroyed this planet that we have to get off before it becomes uninhabitable. Then the rich and powerful states will start searching for ways of living on new planets, and making them inhabitable, pouring hundreds of billions into the system so that the rich and powerful get a new start ;)

Shhhhhhht! DO NOT POST HERE! It is because the main purpose of this thread is not grow up and become looooong as the others.

@|ngenius: don't worry, i'll delete your posts when we've reached 51 (my settings for two pages). :p

@qsilver: that's a mirror when i'm drunk!

let's play "keep me on topic till morning comes" allright?

rahvin.

nah. if someone is going to leave this planet that is George W Bush using his Americana-ass to get thru the atmosphere.

Oh, it wasn't you in the middle?

Well something on topic then..
I don't think that WE will see any permanent colony on any object in space but after 100-200 years it could be possible. I personally wouldn't like to move to Jupiter or any other planet, I kind of like the atmosphere here on earth :p

Nah we will all die in flames :hotjump: I don't have much faith in mankind, so I'm thinking we'll all die in some freak accident before we realise that it is actually going to happen... so there will be no time to go off and colonize some other poor, defenseless planet...

i do think we will be able to establish first outposts on other planets or moons by the end of this century.

I am sure that we will die before a colonization of another planet could begin...or we'll just destroy this world, so there won't be any trace left of mankind. I don't know which one would be better

i've heard there are plenty of limitations (physical limits i mean) to mankind leaving this place and moving to another. for instance, being impossible to travel at the speed of light - and scientists think this is going to remain impossible - there is not a chance that we'll ever cover any "meaningful" distance, i.e. going anywhere but to mars and the moon. thoughts?

rahvin.

Nope, that's pretty much correct.
All that science fiction is just that, science fiction.

In fact, It is very implausible to even realistically have mass immigration to mars or the moon. Maybe in the far future.. if we haven't destroyed ourselves and our planet before.

I'm quite sceptical about whatever the latest trends in science are but I don't want to completely rule out the possibility that some of them turn out to be functional. In this case The Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics is a theory that seems to give us a means to transfer information from one place to another in real time no matter the distance. But it's just a theory afterall and I don't know much about it. Maybe someone else knows something?

I've thought about this from the standpoint that eventually the earth will cease to exist simply from the expanding of the sun. But for some reason I never thought about it's destruction due to our own actions. I think we will be able to have some sort of limited colonization on the moon or Mars possibly. I don't really think we will finish ourselves off, because when it becomes urgent for people to change there ways, they will do so. But at the moment, it's not obvious that we are in trouble in the near future, so nothing will change anytime soon, even though things should change. So that's what I think.
