Like them? Hate them? Why? Examples of great ones? Examples of failures?

I've always liked them. My favorites are:

David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Jethro Tull - Thick as a Brick
Iron Maiden - Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Opeth - SL, MAYH
Genesis - Foxtrot

To name a very few...

Obviously Queensryche - Mindcrime
Savatage - Gutter Ballet, Streets - some great songs on those
Buckethead - Bucketheadland 1 & 2, some others. - 2 is great

Personally I couldn't care less if an album is a concept album or not. Most of the time the concepts are so vague that if you didn't know about it beforehand you probably wouldn't even notice it (especially with extreme metal where the lyrics are often hard to make out). It can add a certain cohesion to the album by connecting the songs like on MAYH, but in the end it is the quality of the music within a given song that really matters to me.

And I think The Wall is the most overrated concept album ever. That album was a huge step down in quality from the work before that and overall is just very self-indulgent and boring.
