Background: there's a new "studio" that's been spamming CL every few days, I tuned them out a few weeks back, they're apparently going after the dance/rap/R&B/whatever market from what I remember. You know the ads, 1 blurry logo, ALL DETAILS ABOUT BEATS AND PRODUCTION ARE IN ALL CAPS.

Hobbyists vs. pros has been talked about plenty here, and how lower priced/performed work affects those who have the gear, experience, and know-how to back up their rates, so I thought it might make an interesting read for some of you.

While I see where this guy is coming from, he's making it sound like you need to have a proper studio and PTHD to make a good recording. I know I'm spinning it a little, but there are bedroom AEs in this forum that will turn around a better metal recording than most "proper" AEs.

gah, sorry guys. If it gets repeated, I'll screencap it.

Long story short, it was a number of paragraphs and bullet points about how owning an MBox with ProTools LE and an MXL mic didn't mean you could call yourself a "studio" and charge the same as what studios in Providence and Boston did. Lots of points to consider for people looking for a studio (other releases, are they using cracked plugs in their mom's basement, what their rate structure is like, are they in a building with insurance that would cover your gear if it was stolen in the middle of a session, etc).

I agree with GGI that he stressed a little too much on the "pro" aspect of studios, and many bedroom AEs here can turn out great mixes, but many of his points were good about how too many people download a bunch of Waves plugs and decide to call themselves a studio.
