Dealing with frustration

Work out, have sex, socialise (go out!), meditate, stay away from too much caffeine (that's the hardest one haha) and keep yourself busy but not stressed-out.

Watch Comedy shows, like The Office, It's always sunny, etc. Comedians.

I get upset or angry, I watch comedy and I feel better , even if just for that time, but it does give you a little chance to get yourself together.

I don't give a fuck what anyone says in this thread, DON'T utilize a violent or aggressive channel for your energy. To quote Farley: "I know from experience dude."

Thanks guys. I'll try to get back into working out regularly. I've already attempted to flip my diet over more towards lean meats and vegetables, trying to really get things in order. Engineering can be such a sedentary job, it helps to take care of oneself.

@James: It's not so much personal as something that's been well-treaded here before. It's just frustration at the general state of affairs and my powerlessness for the moment to change them. It's not so much one issue, but a bunch of different things combined.

Funny that not a single person has mention writing/composing music !?
Mixing can drive me nuts, but to actually sit down and compose music is, and always have been, the best medicine to deal with frustration in my case!
(and It doesn't necessarely have to be a metal-song, unless you wan't someone one this board to hear it :p)

well, its a way, but i usually dont like the things that come out of pissed of mood writing sessions :p

so something along the lines of, "the state of music production is horrible, and almost everyone's work sucks and steals the life and vibe of the music, and i want to change that single-handedly but don't yet have the connections/skills", etc. et al, ?

that's the general thrust of a few of your threads, at least as i've interpreted them, lately... and if i'm right, then well... just worry about getting better, and stop worrying about everyone else, or every album that you didn't get to do, and/or that didn't get done the way you'd personally like. put all that energy you are currently wasting on feeling frustrated about productions you didn't do, and put it into improving so that you can do albums the way you feel they should be done.

but bear in mind as you do so that opinions about production and mixing are very, very subjective, and always in transition... both as a cultural phenomenon and within each individual (the latter only worth mentioning separately because it's sometimes at odds with the prevailing trends). IOW, don't be too surprised if when you achieve your personal goals there isn't a whole new contingent of up-and-comers that decry your methods and results, and are in turn frustrated in their efforts to articulate and achieve something quite different which they are sure will much better represent the true vibe, dynamics, and intentions of the music. realize this, and you'll soon realize the utter futility of worrying too hard about anything but your own work, and the primacy of the here and now.

Man... I miss those times when I felt like music could solve ANY of my problems. Literally ANY problem. I don't feel that way anymore and thus I also feel frustrated/depressed/stressed/weird in a rotating manner.

+1

A few years ago I was totally frustrated about the local music scene, getting gigs etc. I worried about all that shit.

Now I put all my energy into my music and business and life feels a lot better.
Just like James said.

Don't waste your time worrying about shit you can't change.
Use your energy to create something cool.

+1. Was thinking that recently too.

It use to just be a case of blasting some 'tallica, Death, Dark Tranquillity or Iced Earth and all the world would go away for a while.

For me: TV, movies, videogames, cigarettes, some weed, and the ultimate stress reliever:

The way to deal with frustration is to learn to deal with it. Life is exactly that: an endless pile of frustrating events that keep you from achieving what you want to achieve. The only way to deal with frustrations is to learn that they are inevitable and are part of life.

Fucking, hitting things, drugs, shooting, etc. won't remove the source of the frustration. Only adjusting your attitude can do that.

Also: achievement kills frustration. You're an early-20s, have-nothing (in the sense of equipment), work-from-home, no-experience, no creds, no connections BEGINNER. What do you expect to happen? You simply can't be Randy Lord-Wallace, no matter how much you would love that. I mean this in the most positive sense, because comparing yourself to the top is a good thing, but also futile. You have to achieve first and beginners start at the bottom and work their way up, regardless of your apparent skill!

Everyone in the music business is frustrated a lot of the time. Most people quit because of that. Those who do it for the love of it usually stick around. So instead of being frustrated, adjust your attitude and be prepared to go the long road cause otherwise you'll work in a bank or in IT sooner than you think.

damn fucking, shooting, drugs....so pathetic.
Sounds like 90´Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis role-modell for real life?

1.Take some time and think about what realy is the source of your frustration.
2.Think about options you have, to make the best out of your situation
3.Make something that gives you some energy back

well i guess most of the things above were more about "letting of some steam" rather than dealing with the actual cause of frustration...
which of course you need a clear head to work on. it quite clear that some bruce willis action wont erease your problems....even if a lold my ass of reading this hehe

Sell all your shit, get off the internet, and move to an ashram in India. You may think I'm taking the piss, but I'm really not. Do something crazy like that, and your life will change forever.
