This is pretty much what I'm listening to this last month, and was wondering what bands you guys and girls would recommend. Been playing Anathema, My Dying Bride, Funeral's latest, Morgion, and Katatonia. Also re-discovered Novembers Doom and discovered Keen of the Crow. Also realized how good early Orphaned Land truly is.

Other stuff that's been playing: current Amorphis, Swans, Akercocke, Dornenreich, 3rd and the Mortal, Jesu, Nightingale...basically progressive or atmospheric type metal. Any recos are welcome.

No genre corrections please. :)

Saturnus, Rapture, Slumber, Thurisaz....although I admit it all starts to sound the same after a while if clean vocals are abandoned altogether.

Death/Doom is so much better when they incorporate a mix of clean vocals.

Celestial Season - first two
Ceremonium
Deinonychus
Despond
Dusk (US)
Estatic Fear
Forest Of Shadows
Mar De Grises
Ningizzia
Officium Triste
Spina Bifida

FYI, fans of Conan the Barbarian might want to check out Keen of the Crow's 'Hyborea' album. Good stuff based on the character.

Thanks for the recos so far.

not to derail, since it's not death/doom, but isn't THE Conan album of the year done by Gates of Slumber? "Suffer no Guilt", "Riders of Doom"...although there's some Lovecraft and crusades stuff too.

Not sure if J would like Gates of Slumber.

Winter, Sorrow, Runemagick, Nuctemeron (US), Castle, Spina Bifida, Sempiternal Deathreign, Necro Schizma

Mourning
Ceremonium
Etherial Winds
Divine Eve
Crimson Relic
Delirium
Dusk
Eternal Darkness
Cianide
Gorement
Transgressor/Anatomia
Torchure
Celestial Season
Goatlord
Enchantment

I've been told that Mourning Beloveth is supposed to be like early My Dying Bride.

Necare is awesome. Also see Reclusiam one of their members is that band. You can download their album from their website. EDIT nm the website is down, but i can upload a sample either way.

The beginning and the end of death/doom for me is

Disembowelment - transcendence into the peripheral

Dusk - mourning..resurrect

and most of all the other stuff you know already, evoken, aphotic, mourning beloveth. Also see ataraxie, imindain, indesinence, mistress of the dead..if you like early mdb try lacrimas profundre (first two), and dissolving of prodigy.

Not much to add since i listen to few bands from this genre (MDB, early P.L., Mourning Beloveth and some others) but i'll feel better if i recommend:

HEDON CRIES

and

DECEMBERANCE

two local bands (kinda), they blend influences from various styles together but the overall result falls under the "Death/doom" tag more than anything. Check them out, listen to their songs and love them (especially HEDON CRIES, my favourite from these 2).
