I'm pretty much aware that Chuck Shuldiner and his group Death are fucking legends, and all I've heard up until this point is the song "Spirit Crusher", so what's the first of their records that I should buy, in your guys' opinions?

Human was the first I bought.. enjoyed it very much. I'd say basically any one would do as a first buy... Symbolic might be a little easier to get into.. maybe.. or individual thought patterns... but none of them are really hard to get into.

I personally started with Individual Thought Patterns, though Sound Of Perseverance would probably be the most accessible.

You'd better do this :
Human then Individual Through Patterns AND Spiritual Healing , see what you like best and go forward/back .

Get Human first, and it is a midpoint between their earlier and later sound. It is also their best CD IMO. DO NOT start out with The Sound of Perseverance, which is their worst, and most pretentious CD IMO.

Death is overrated. I used to like Death until I discovered the godly Atheist. Whatever Death album you start out with don't start with TSOP. That album has way too much vapid guitar wankery and bad songwriting.
