Whoa, just noticed its been 1½ years already since I first bumped into these forums. Didn't see the time fly by so fast.
But on the subject: There is this one thing that has been really bothering me on these forums, because quite often I see this triumphcard pulled up that usually ends the conversation: "I can't buy it, because it is too expensive". And then we are usually talking about something like a ~50 dollar software like say Reaper or ApTrigga and the guy in the other end is mixing a bands full lenght album in atleast semi-professional level homestudio. FUCK! Even if you are in the fucking elementary school you can scour up 50 bucks pretty easily if you really need something.
I can understand that some situations in life like unemployment or college (like the situation I am in now myself) really biases your definitions, because in those situations when you really are broke, everything seems too expensive, even food. Before I bought my Genelecs I literally lived for few months mainly on rice, macaroni, veggiefood, soya, tuna, milk, bread and pesto because they are like 0.50-2€ per meal and pretty much covers all your needs without getting an aenemia. But I did lose like 5kg weight during that time which I actually think was kinda good thing considering that I weight ~120kg and my ideal weight is somewhere near 80.
But what is your general specification for "expensive" when talking about gear? And I am not talking about "getting ripped off" or "overpriced", but "expensive". I know this is highly subjective, because for example Waves Mercury bundle is $8300 for native and $13500 for TDM, which may seem like really expensive, but you do get 90 plugins for that price, which makes the average price for a plugin ~$92/$150, but for example when you buy just the L3-16 multiband compressor (which is included in the Mercury bundle), it is $900 for native and $1500 for TDM.
But if I would have to say what I would consider expensive, I would say $2000-3000 for big hardware (like mixers, amps, drumset), $700-1500 for medium sized hardware (guitars, interfaces, rack stuff, expensive mics), and $300-500 for software and small hardware (pedals, cheaper mics etc). I would really have to justify the reasons really hard after those price if I would get them, but until that price range I think I don't feel a sting in my heart.
