Definition of "Black Metal"

neg. mayhem are one of the originators of the norwegian bm sound/scene. saying dimmu is bm at its best but mayhem is rubbish is pretty lol-worthy.

Dimmu isn't BM at its best, but otherwise, the kid was right.

Fuck off and die.

Honestly I really don't like black metal.........I listen to only 3 black metal bands: Ulver, Darkthrone and Negura Bunget (because they are from my country:headbang:), I used to listen to Dimmu but after the 2007 dissapointment "In Sorte Diaboli" I've learned that they are going too comercial.
Anyway my fav DB albums are "For All Tid" and "Stormblast", even if I haven't heard them since last year:rolleyes:

i actually loved in sorte diable, well a few songs at least, just because its commercial doesnt mean its bad, theyre big because a lot of people like them

ulvers shit now sadly, and someone else mentioned samael, ive only heard their last two albums, very very odd

Emperor and Dimmu Are awesome, i like the atmospheres they make. Gorgoroth on the other hand, is also a very good BM band

I havent seen the band Windir mentioned once! Do you guys not consider Windir black metal?

Out of the bands mentioned I like Emperor and Burzum. Hate Dimmu Borgir. Love wolves in the throne room.

I just had a listen of Obombration and I love the atmosphere. Sounds real fucking evil and that strange distant riffing along with the drumming is very different from what I expected, to say the least.

you want an amazing BM band, go for tsjuder(i may have mentioned them) their album desert nothern hell is brilliant, the rest is kinda crappy hahaha, plus they have like the coolest shirts ever

Ignore the ignorant noobs who try to define as either having to have blast beats, poor recording, corpse paint or simple composition, there are many exceptions. Some music is minimalistic such as Darkthrone, Isengard and Beherit but others such as Emperor, Dissection and Borknagar have proven that black metal can be quite technical.

I have been listening to this music since the early 90's and remember with fondness the days of getting demo tapes by Emperor, Gorgoroth, Ancient and the like before they put their first albums out. So, call me a black metal geezer but I do prefer the raw sounding hate filled noise that bands like Black Funeral and Graveland made. Nothing can match the intensity black metal had in those days. *uncle Rico moment*

Bottom line is that black metal defies definition. I've heard some weird shit over the years, all of which could easily be considered black metal. Anything from Root, to Trifixion, to Vondur, to Dimmu Borgir, Master's Hammer, Mortuary Drape, Necromantia, Isengard, In The Woods... All unsimilar bands, all could easily be considered black metal.

The rule comes with the exceptions. What I meant to say, is originally, how do we see black metal. And this is an opinion too. Enslaved, for example, are some kind of progressive black metal. These are specifications, but mainly, what I said before is a brief summary of what black metal is known for.

Black Metal is a lot more than those bands mentioned above...
I think Dimmu Borgirs Euphoric puritanic misantrophy is black metal at it´s best...
Mayhem is absolute rubbish.

You don't even know the title of the album you consider black metal at it's finest. That's just splendid. For your information it's called "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia" and it blows major donkey cock.

Black Metal is anything written by norwegian musicians with long black hair, gutteral grim-vocals and double bass drums

You don't even know the title of the album you consider black metal at it's finest. That's just splendid. For your information it's called "Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia" and it blows major donkey cock.

In addition to that, Mayhem is much more the original "underground"-ish black metal than Dimmu. Dimmu is more symphonic, and especially the three latest albums of Dimmu is NOT very original black metal.

A problem i have with most bm bands though is that they seem to be doing it for the "cool" factor and trying to be as dark and rediculous as possible

Metal is fucking zero without the imagery. And that was the very idea behind extreme metal (which includes more than just BM), to go as 'insane' as possible in order to sell more. Without that attitude, you wouldn't have this Opeth forum to be discussing this topic in.
