I bought this a week ago, and I fucking love it.
Anyway, I seem to recall some people expressing a mild disliking of it, so I'm just wondering what that was all about.

Any thoughts?

Among my top three Opeth albums (although I consider all at least great ;) )

People bitched about the production, but I like it and after seeing Lamentations, I'm surprised it turned out that good, lol

i was never big on master's apprentices, and wreath left a little to be desired from opeth. a fair judgement (imo) was a little out of place.

I love a fair judgement, wreath has begun to grow on me, and master apprentices i'm still nt fond of

a fair judgement & by the pain i see in others will be your favourite deliverance tracks in a year's time

I think someone on here called it the brother of Blackwater Park, which seems like a pretty good description. I wouldn't go as far as to say its a BP B-Sides, but it definatly has the same flavour, and a lot of people (me included) love that album a lot and would probably rather listen to it instead of Deliverance.

Deliverance is an awesome Opeth album. All the bashing on here done on it are fanboys that still live in there mommies basement, and have nothing better to do.

Once you see Opeth live and hear Deliverance, it will be a special for the rest of your life. A Fair Judgement will be one of those songs as well.

I saw Opeth live and heard Deliverance but I can't say it was all too special for me. The song was greatly eclipsed by other tracks such as April Ethereal, The Moor and Blackwater Park. Just my opinion of course, but I don't think a broad generalisation on all those who've expressed dislike of elements on Deliverance is doing any justice to anyone.

A Fair Judgement is definitely a great track !
This is the track that has grown on me the most.
I was hoping to see it live on the recent US tour... maybe next time ???

Deliverance is Opeth's anthem IMO.

By The Pain I See in Others is the hidden jewel. It is most evil !

Wreath is the only non-great song, but has it's moments.

Masters Apprentices also gets a thumb's up.

For Absent Friends is a nice bridge between Deliverance & AFJ.

Now I want to play the album.

Yeah, I'm with Pethical, I'd take it over BWP.
The whole album is great, cool atmosphere all the way through.
Wreath was my pick of the lot, though A Fair Judgement is probably my pick right now.

How can anyone say anything negative about this album?! It blew me away when it was first released and still does today. Flawless, and Deliverance is one of the greatest songs ever written. And listen to the acoustic bit near the start of By The Pain I See In Others...eerie.

Deliverance was my introduction to opeth and it is my 2nd favourite album behind Orchid. Im not a real big fan of their more popular albums - MAYH, BP, SL

Deliverance and masters apprentice rule :kickass: :kickass: :kickass: :kickass:

Wreath and Deliverance are a fairly crushing 25 minutes of unrelenting Opeth and the rest of the album is strong too. Not my favourite record, but I'd probably lap it up if Opeth started doing Rod Stewart covers.

This is just a theory, but maybe people got a bad taste in their mouth after hearing the opening riff...its one of my favourite albums, but I remember years back when I heard it the first time that opening track did not rub me well... after listening to SL and BWP it just seemed much less sophisticated and much more "generic death metal". Maybe this is why people hated on it a bit because first-impressions are usually very powerful.

I dont have a fav. Opeth album but delieverance would be a serious contender, more so than BWP for me nowadays.

I totally agree with you Stimuli. First I didnt like Wreath either, I thought it was boring as hell. But I just kept listening to it, to the point where I might say that Deliverance is a bit underrated, compared to all their other albums.

A Fair Judgement is in my top 5 Opeth songs... I can't say whether I like BWP or Deliverance more, but they are definitely similar in style. I think BWP is a bit more epic, being that it has a complete mix of songs... Deliverance's softer material being on Damnation. I like Deliverance because it's a nice tight package of heaviness...
