Deliverance

Agree with the outro on AFJ. I wish it would stop right after "nothing left here".
Exactly what I thought. I remeber the first time I heard it and i thought it had a perfect ending. Then the outro kicked in...

Its actually my least favorite Opeth album. But least favorite opeth album for any other band would be their crowning moment.

I dont HATE any song on deliverance, but i just dont like the songs as a whole as much as the other Opeth Albums. Wreath was one of my least favorite Opeth songs forawhile.. then i put it one one day and it kicked my ass around the room. heh. Iv always liked Deliverance, a fair judgement, and masters. By the pain of others might have just been a bad way to end the record thus leaving a bad taste in my mouth. The circus section owns though.

like i said. Its a great album, but by opeth standerds its not quite up to it. However, if i count damnation and deliverance as ONE single album as it was ment to be, it would be in my top 3 opeth albums. So i dont know.heh. im done ranting.

that is all.

Deliverance is a strong album. It's a bit repetitive here and there and some death parts are quite uninspired but what I like the most about the album, is it's wholeness, the clear and distinct atmosphere surrounding the whole record.
For example the ending to Wreath and the beginning to the title track are connected greatly and the same can be said about the link between songs 2 and 3.
The album isn't perfect but it has some "edge" that I really love. Same kind of edge is present also on Morningrise.
Mikael's vocals on Deliverance are also great. He really sounds raw on that album, not just trying to sound raw like it was on their latest album.

Not sure if I understand your last line correctly, but if you think Mikael's vocals are better on Deliverance than on Ghost Reveries I am suprised.

Yes, that's what I mean. The death vocals on Deliverance are more brutal than on GR. Comparing the mellow vocals I prefer D too.
Mike sounds somehow more genuine on Deliverance than on GR. I'm not very much into his recent overdramatic prog-style-singing. But that's just me.

I bought it today. I'd already heard most of it previously, so nothing new. Awesome album though. That wicked solo roughly half-way through Wreath totally makes that song. Master's Apprentices and Deliverance = win.
The last tracks not too bad either, though I really don't care for the reversed vocal special effects thing at the very end.

it was my introduction to opeth so it will always be one of my favourites ...

but how is the opening riff so bad? it's so straight forward and heavy, the perfect intro for a dark, heavy death metal album if you ask me. the mood is set from the very first intro drumpart ...
amazing album ;)

I'd agree with that.

The only bad thing obout it is how the guitars are alittle too small at the end of Deliverance (I feel like that because I'm used to the Lamentations version, methinks).

I think someone on here called it the brother of Blackwater Park, which seems like a pretty good description. I wouldn't go as far as to say its a BP B-Sides, but it definatly has the same flavour, and a lot of people (me included) love that album a lot and would probably rather listen to it instead of Deliverance.
Funny. I've always thought it was Still Life and Blackwater Park that sounded simialr to me.

First i didnt like it, but in the last year it grew on me very much!
Deliverance and Wreath are one of their best songs and the soli from a fair judgement are just orgasmic.

album with best death vox from mikael, for me

Well really, all 3 sound similar, compared to the ones before and after those albums at least. But Still Life has a very distinct sound, people have often discussed it, something to do with multiple layers of guitars or something :p

And Still Life obviously doesn't have any of the (vocal) effects used heavily on BP and Deliverance too.

None of the 3 albums REALLY sound like each other, but there are always comparisons being made on here between BP and Deliverance, much like Morningrise and Orchid, they are just the easiest to compare I suppose.

If Deliverance is BP's brother I suppose SL is BP's dad, or uncle or something... I don't know, this is the Opeth forum not a genealogy discussion
