Ok listen, assholes, I'm gonna post my current favourite album and what I consider to be the greatest thing I've discovered in 2009, and I owe the discovery to a cover that appears on Pearls Before Swine's
Balaklava. The track I refer to is "Suzanne," a tune which I had assumed was penned by Pearls Before Swine's Tom Rapp, but my dad pointed out that it is in fact a Leonard Cohen song.
So I check out Cohen's 1967 debut album,
Songs of Leonard Cohen
and find that it opens with the original recorded version of that very same song, "Suzanne." It sounds alright, I think, and so do the 10 other original tunes on here. Somewhat Dylan-ish, very melancholy, decidedly NOT psych or hippie or any of that... and what I notice with repeat listens are some of the most expressive, moving lyrics I've heard backed by music influenced by European folk as well as the pop of the day.
Someone better give this a listen when I upload songs later. Anyone heard the guy before?
