DI Box Comparison (Clips inside)

Some time ago Ermz gave me 3 sets of DI's and a backing track to play with. I finally got around to looking at them today.

DI's used were:

Radial JDV
Little Labs Red Eye
Ermz's Millennia Preamp Instrument In
(correct me if I am wrong Ermz)

I am only posting them in the rough mix at the moment because that's how 99.999% of people would hear the results anyway. To avoid any "favouritism" I havent revealed which is which.

The guitars have just been thrown together with the backing track, all at the same level and absolutely raw, no HP/LP, etc... I am sure they could be nicer with some EQ. I didn't tweak the amp settings or the Mic position from where they were already set. I just turned the amp on and hit Record. Yeah, I was a bit lazy.

Anyway, if anybody cares, take a listen and make a comment.

is there is a difference it's very subtle, that or my ears are shot.
I really can't tell them apart.

Even listening to the WAV's, if there is a difference I cannot consistantly pick it. I think I hear something..............then nothing.........then ¯\(°_o)/¯

Here are the same clips with HP/LP and a notch at 6400 on the guitars. That fizz was annoying me.

By all means post the raw wav files.

My impressions kept changing as I listened. On cans initially I thought that 1) Millennia 2) Red Eye 3) JDV but the more I listened the more they muddled around in my head. The differences seem so subtle that it doesn't really matter.

It is a large file (40 MB) and there is a spoiler TXT file in there. Not that it matters since they are so close. But I will not post the "reveal" here just yet. If you want to read it in the RAR it's up to you.

That's the beauty of active pickups. In-built preamp, less contingent on the DI and mic pre.

Brutal, my initial impressions were completely wrong. The differences are so minute that I'd be happy using any of em really. Since the Millennia one is easiest that will likely be the case. Lack of a pad makes it hard to not clip the converters though.

Wonder how much more substantial the difference is with passive PUs.

Probably more noticeable due to the lack of Pickup Preamp like you mentioned regarding the Actives.
