Dimmu Borgir's re-recording of "Stormblåst"

pssst... you've been mentioning Dimmu Borgir and creative in the same post

Yes, I think they are creative and write great music.

Erik: Why is it so bad in your eyes to make a career (making dough) in music?

Forget the creative part, it wasn't fully thought out.

Fair enough I guess. Yet, I can't think of a single band in my collection where I feel that the record company has "violated" the artistic integrity.

So what? Is it so bad of them to try to make a living out of their music? We all know how shitty the music business is and I think it's their right to re-record the album so they can make a few more $ from their compositions.

THe timing is what makes all the difference to me. It's been ten years since they originally recorded Stormblast. SO now, at the height of the band's popularity, they suddenly just decide "Hey lets re-record this album so we can start making money off of it because we're a helluva lot more popular now than back in 2000 or 2002. We'll make it more listenable and ear friendly and have some super cool photoshop cover to appeal to all the metal dumbasses out there! My gothic girlfriend also needs some new black dresses and leather and whips. SHow me the money!"

Fuck off the greed.

Wow, you're right!

Look, they claimed that they were going to keep it as close to the original as possible. They basically did the opposite. Change riffs entirely? Throw a new (and shitty) song in instead of a beautiful instrumental? The album was raped of its atmosphere... it really seems that they went to each individual song and said, "Well okay, let's find out what makes this song really good so we can remove or change it!"

That's just your opinion. To my ears it sounds incredible. And the reason Sorgens kammer? is not there is because they don't have the rights to it since they didn't write it in the first place.

i never understand why fans think they should have some sort of say in what an artist does with their own art. some of you dudes act like the suits from major labels!

Don't you fucking realize that I am the head of both Century Media and Nuclear Blast?
can i send you a demo? ah nevermind your labels suck. :loco:

note: it's perfectly fine to get pissed off at a band for doing such things, i'd probably be mad if one of my favorite records was bastardized in such a way (i don't even like remastered albums to be honest). but at the same time, i can't expect a band to follow my every whim.

I know what you're saying... I just feel really "let down" or something. To ME this says that Dimmu Borgir has no respect for what the album used to be and the magic that it held within. Sure, they'll do whatever they want, and they should be able to do whatever they want, I'm just sort of BLeahsedsuarhasur4h4h234h34hwahdashdsss about how it went. :)

Fun fact: If I had an awesome label and a lot of money, you'd already have pressed material.

I think DB did great with this one, not to be shithead against Erik, but have you always used the money from Nasheim incomes to useless shit?
I'VE NEVER MADE ANY MONEY OFF NASHEIM. I give records away for postage money (to break even) and I do not receive any money from the label.

Here's a thought... perhaps they were never happy with the sound of that disc. Perhaps they felt like they didn't have the budget to realize their creative vision back then. Perhaps it wasn't until now, at the height of their popularity, that they had enough pull with their record label to let them re-record this CD. Keep in mind, a good portion of their newfound popularity has come from the American audience getting turned on to them. I don't think a CD, recorded in a language other than English, will sell real well over here.

This talk of artistic integrity, really starts to smell of bullshit after a while. Artistic integrity is about one thing and one thing only; making music that you yourself enjoy. Whose to say the guys in Dimmu don't think their new version of "Stormblast" is the greatest thing since sliced bread? It's wierd how some folks definition of artistic integrity requires that a band never evolve.

Ten years ago I would have never listened to anything as heavy as Blood Red Throne's "Altered Genesis" or Decapitated's "The Negation". Today, I really dig those discs. If my tastes can change that drastically in ten years, I have no problem accepting that a musician's taste could change as quickly. As a matter of fact, I would expect a musician's tastes to evolve more quickly.

^^ I agree with everything except the part about the american audience. I think the sales there is nothing but a small part of their total sales.

Dude. Your argument would be great if applied to other circumstances, but it is a FACT that Dimmu Borgir have said in interviews that this was done with the EXPLICIT and SOLE PURPOSE of getting money.

Some people are still hoping Dimmu Borgir will release an album in the style of Stormblast again. Yet I don't think this will happen. Am I correct?
I can tell you a secret. It's not officially yet but we're not gonna make a new Stormblast album. But it might have to be re-recorded. Because if we don't re-record it all the money of the album will go to our old label. Obviously we don't want to re-record it but we don't want other people to get the money either, so it's a very delicate situation. So we'll see what we will do, but at the moment we don't have the time for it. It will not to happen in the first few months. We will keep the re-recordings as close to the original as possible, so without triggers etc…

So obviously they didn't keep to the last part of that, what with "keeping the recording close to the original" and all but the fact is that the reason behind them doing this was a matter of getting royalties for an album they were currently not getting any for. All money.

EDIT: The key words here are OBVIOUSLY WE DON'T WANT TO RE-RECORD IT. It was done for money, no fucking artistic reasons.

Tranquilian is 99% right. Every band in the world releases "Stuff" for MONEY. DB did what 324324324 others did before them. If you guys think that your favourite bands dont have MAINLY MONEY in mind when they release an album, you should wake up.
