Distortus Maximus

since i read this last posts about Diy Distortus Maximus, i told my friend if he can build one for me, and today i got it, i must say this pedal is really good, best distortion pedal i ever played, plugged it and played through my Krank rev Jr clean channel, and sound really similar to the rev jr distortion, with less fizz, and also played through the clean channel of the 5150 and sounds awesome too, tomorrow i´ll try it with some SS amps and see what happens.

I wanted this pedal for live usage, because im tired to carry my sansamp and g-major in this two space rackmount, and i think this gonna be my new live rig with a Boss Eq pedal

can you get him to build me one? would like to try ;)

Of course Lasse, though i don´t know how much will be to ship it to Germany, but not much probably because is a small thing, maybe some 40 Us Dlls.

This pedal is so practical for playing live, the more i play with it, the more i like it, i tried it today with a mosvalve power amp i have, and sounds great too, this thing have lots of volume due to a little half watt amp it has inside (according to my friend), however i just need him to do some more tweaking (a litle bit more bass, because he lowered the bass as he was building it). i wonder if there are some practical mods to do to this amp to make it better, i would ask him what he can do.

Wow dude, so you just use the pedal straight into the power amp and it sounds good? If you have the pedal bypassed, does that give you at all of a useable clean sound?

Hey man, sounds good, could you Email me the schematic he used please?

Yea dude, played in low volume, but still sound more than useable, i´ll compare it later to the sansamp cause i would like to see differences in volume etc., i haven´t bypassed the pedal because it is still in prototype mode hehe, it hasn´t the bypass switch yet, it´s al ready on when i plug it in.

Of course, but you can find it here too:

Cool, did your friend change anything from those schematics?

As far as i know he build it exactly like those schematics, he just say he lowered the bass, but the guy in that thread lowered the bass too, so i don´t know if my friend put it lower than that, but i would like it to have more bass because i fell a little lack of it, however i boost it with the Eq pedal.

I already tried against my Sansamp Psa-1 to see if i can replace it as my live rig, and definitely yes. I still like more the sansamp because the infinite sound posibilities i can get with it, but since i carried it with me everywhere the last 4 years, 1.-Is a little beated up from use (rackcase felt up several times causing the little screen moved inwards the enclosure of the preamp) but still works like a champ and is built like a tank, and 2.- im tired of moving it, want to leave it at home and just for ocational gigs, and donwsizing my rig to just two pedals Kick ass.

I tried the distortus maximus straight power amp thing a while back and it was very quiet and the mids were horribly dense.......how did you set the controls on the pedal?

i have mids at 12 o´clock a bass almost cranked and highs like 2 o clock, it´s not quiet the thing has lots of volume, i´ll try to make a video with some comparison in different amps or something.

Do you think that to sell my sansamp psa1 and buy tubescreamer and this krank distortus maximus instead of it is a good idea? I need it for recording direct to soundcard and then to apply impulses (no live usage). I´m tired of sansamp...

ahjteam: of course, but it is not so easy here, I don´t know anybody who have it here, and there are only few stores which have it stocked and there i cannot try it with impulses and experiment with it...

Have someone to build it for you, isn´t expensive.

I don´t know what to say to you, i would never sell my sansamp, i really like it and have many uses for it, but if you really don´t like it then sell it, but probably for direct use, sansamp will beat the crap out the distortus maximus, the later is to use it in front of an amp, but then again, i haven´t tried it direct.

I had a distortus maximus for a couple of days and then sold it on ebay. I didn't like it at all. I would rather call it distortus minimus.
I didn't try it on a real am though, I just chucked it infront of my pod xt. So if you are playing through a modeler, forget it. It might sound good on a poper amp setup but definitely bad with a pod.

cobhc: the link to the krank impulse didn't work for me. Mind uploading again? I was trying to find one for ages.

Interesting turn this thread has taken. There's theoretically no reason why a good distortion pedal shouldn't sound like a solid state preamp - because it is one, essentially. If it sounds good, go with it! :)

Any Recabinet owners have one of these pedals? Curious to hear how it would sound, particularly with the "Igor" cabinet in Recabinet (Krankenstein 4x12.) Perhaps I'll give it a go myself at some point if I can borrow the pedal again.

i'm not sure how it could ever be minimus..........even just line in on a mixing desk with headphones it's got huuoowwwgggeee amounts of gain

the amount of gain was fine but the sound was awful. I tried it out, couldn't get a usable sound out of it and sold it.
I cannot imagine this thing to sound even half way decent straight into a mixer.
