My band writes outside of 4/4 a lot of the time, though we still use it a fair amount. Sometimes we do it because it feels like that's where the song should go, other times we do it to challenge ourselves, and then occasionally we do it to be dicks to ourselves and the audience. That's just what we go for though and I've been in other bands that only wrote in 4/4 or 3/4 sometimes.
Oh, and Soundgarden writes outside 4/4 a lot, especially for radio-rock band.
