Do you buy or download your albums?

I buy most of my albums. Rare is it that I download full albums unless it is a hard to find one. I prefer having the original cd in my collection.

I'm actually addicted to buying albums, seriously I can't help myself, any one else feel this way?

I do both.. because I don't want to waste my money on a shit album when I can just download it and listen to it first and see it its worth buying.

I used to use the method of downloading a few individual songs from an album in order to make a judgement on it, but since I've started downloading entire albums, I've realized what a flawed method that is. In many cases, it's impossible to get a good idea of the quality of an album from just hearing a few songs; an album is often intended to be a single unified work. There's certainly many albums which I wouldn't have bought if I hadn't heard them in their entirety beforehand, and vice versa.
Both of those.

EDIT: And:

I think everyone would agree that having an original CD with a great CD sleeve with nice artwork beats having downloaded an album. The CD sleeve really does tell you alot about the band and the message they're trying to put across.

According to me, downloading the entire album of a band is damn shit.

I use the internet to listen to new bands and bands that I won't automatically buy a CD from, but if I like it, I buy it 100% of the time. I will defend my form of musioc introduction to the death as I have over 650 CDs to prove I support bands I like, but if a band puts out a shit album, I am not going to buy it.

I might just be really weird, but if I download the whole of an album (which I've only ever done once, and never again) it just doesn't give you the same feeling -the anticipation and excitement- as when you've bought a new album, and you just sit and listen to all the songs. It feels great to me, and gives me a bit of an adrenaline rush to buy a new cd, take it home and sit and listen. Downloading just doesn't feel right. I mean, I have to admit, I do download the odd song or two to see if a particular band sucks or rocks, but buying is sooooo much better *thumbs up* Good day my pretties xXx

I burn cds by say, Pink Floyd. Because, hey they're rich enough, they don't need my money. Underground bands, I'll burn some random songs on mix cds... I'll buy a cd or 2. And some merch...

I've just learned (nooB) about DC++ and downloading full albums, thanks Shroud. Up until last week, I was trying to find hard-to-find metal on Kazaa and WinMX.. Impossible. So I ended up buying the CD online, ripping it, and selling it on ebay.

It really wasn't that bad. I had a constant flow of new CD's coming in (about 2-3 a week) which is all i had time really to listen to. Plus, I would rip them myself, so I wasn't losing any quality. That helps out the bands also. Since I sold my CD's used, and bought many of them new.

But now.... I'm gonna start downloading the Hard-to-Find albums instantly!! Like a kid in a candy store.

First of all why should the bands care if they make money? If they don't make enough treat making the music as a hobby like i do. I could care less if i made money for albums i write. I just want to write music for the sake of writing and putting my soul into my own passion and being able to express myself to others with the aid of music. I couldn't care if i made $1 or $1,000,000. It's not a big deal to me concerning how much it makes.

Oh and i do both. Though i buy quite a lot of CDs. The other day i bought 3 iron maiden releases, and the weak before 3 sabbath releases and autopsy's severed survival. I prefer to have an actual CD with the booklet and case and everything rather than mp3 files. But downloading does help. I'd rather not waste $15 on a piece of shit album.

I thought some parts of this were funny. "According to me," is just priceless.

I usually download the whole album, and if it impress me, then I will buy the album immediately.
Exactly.

And then sometimes there's a band that I would never give the time of day unless I could hear their music for free, so it's not like those bands are losing any money from me anyways.

Alas, we come to bands such as Agalloch, Alghazanth, Windir, Disgorge...etc etc that I really happen to like, yet can't find CD's of anywhere I look. Nor do I have a credit card for online purchaces. Being able to download their music gives me a chance to own their music that I would otherwise not be able to hear. And if they ever made a tour stop near me I would gladly buy a ticket and a t-shirt, that's where they see alot of the profits.
