Do you have children?

My mom liked classical and 70s rock like ZZ top and Boston

My stepfather liked floyd, zepplin, Earth, Wind and Fire, Surf music(he has it ALL on records..first prints too! Somekick ass guitar playing in that stuff!)

When I got into metal, my parents did not mind-as long I got good grades and did not come home drunk or drugged out.

I am not going to have kids, but I have a 7 year old nephew that hits the strings in my stepdad's strat copy and says he wants to "gutar" like uncle. My sister is a conservative Christitan type...I will corrupt him!!!
MUHAHAHAHA!!!

I got three of 'em! They get into some of the stuff I listen to. I must point out that I could careless what they listen to on a regular basis. Nothing worse than a parent trying to force feed their beliefs, ect on their kids. I figure they can listen to whatever they want. They will realize that's it all filler sooner or later & listen to stuff with a little more punch to it.

My dad listens to a wide variety of music, most of which I don't favor but have respect for. I'm fifteen right now and ever since I can remember, my dad has been introducing me to new music, everything from Dire Straits to Armenian music to Vivaldi to blues. His love for music was what inspired me to pick up a guitar seven years ago. He keeps a real open mind to my music, and will happily listen to Metallica, Opeth, and In Flames. He even bought me my first record and metal record when I was eight, an Entombed single from Wolverine Blues.

My mom loves nu metal and all it entails. My dad listens to nu metal, country, and rock.

I don't listen to music around them much, unless it's my music and I'm blasting it like a mofo, which happens quite often because I am far more persistent then those weak-willed sissies.

Yeah for me the question would be-do I want to influence my children- or force them to be of the same likes and desires as myself? I suppose this is a question I will deal with when I have children.

Yes. If you're happier with yourself, than you are with the general state of the world, do it.

Wow... how crazy is it that only one parent replied to this post? I'm not at all complaining. I think it's great that the younger crew are listening to metal, but I thought for sure there'd be more parents on this message board. Hell, I was listening to the louder shit twenty-something years ago. I can't be the only one who procreated. Heh.

I am however, so glad "kids today" have some decent taste in music.

Don't feel so alienated :). There were a bunch of older (is that a good word? :)) people around here before..

that's why I love internet - age is very subjective... People judge your age by the way you present yourself :)...

Old fart here. Two kids. One year old and three years old. The three year old is pretty funny. I drive them to daycare in the morning, and occasionally there just happens to be some metal in the cd player (don't tell my wife, of course). So I will say to the boy: Hey, Alex, you wanna listen to some Rock & Roll?

Now, he asks to hear it. I know he really does not "like" it, so to speak, but he gets a kick out of asking for it. Funny thing is, though, is that he always asks to hear some "Rocket Power", which seems to be how he remembers me saying it. I will then ask him what kind of "Rocket Power" he wants to hear, and he will say: "The kind with the yelling guy and the screaming lady". LOL!!!

i just turned 18 yesterday but for the past 2-3 years ive been slowly feeding my dad my music, he now likes children of bodom, arch enemy, amorphis, opeth, soilwork, slayer, in flames, the provenance etc... Then again he's always been into rock like sabbath, zeppelin, pink floyd, jimi hendrix, wishbone ash etc... He's seen pretty much every famous rock band from the 60's and 70's that you can think of, bastard heh

heh I've been feeding my dad a bit as well. He like's progressive rock, but isn't updated on today's prog. scene, so I burned some Dream Theater and Porcupine Tree for him and he loves it, but since the guy is almost 50 I don't think I should introduce him to Death and Black metal just yet he he

By the way.. do you all think you're gonna listen to the same music when you're like 90 years old? I really don't think the youngster's music in the future will shock me as todays music has shocked my grandmother. All the metal will probably be all techno and shit

True, Shell Shock, age IS subjective. I know kids my son's age (my son included) who are mature for their age. I also know folks my own age who act like children. Heh.

I think it's great you're letting your kids listen to Rocet Power, Elephant. My son's been listening to this stuff since he was wee. For a long time I censored what he was getting. Now he's old enough to take the swearing and such. I've always made sure to educate him about such words and how they're used. I don't know how else to explain it really... but he's very respectful of others and how they take "bad words" and knows when and where he can used thos words (at home). Yeah... like I said earlier, I'm a pretty lax parent.

Yaknow... I wonder what I'll be listening to when I'm older. I go through fazes though, I guess. Sometimes I listen to punk, sometimes I wanna hear funk, sometimes some mellow shit, sometimes a little Willie Nelson. I think I'll always listen to the loud shit though. It's just a part of me.

Well, my situation is fairly bad compared to everybody else's here, apparently. Heh. My parents are very close-minded musically, all they listen to is country, and they allow me to listen to metal(which suprises me) but they take a shot at it every fucking chance they get. They always talk about how it's just trashy music, takes no skill to play, is just a bunch of yelling and screaming, blah, blah, blah, and refuse to let me go to concerts. It gets annoying as fuck. Anybody else in this situation?

download the video for decapitated's 'spheres of madness', show the fret work to them...and then laugh in their faces or something. or download some cannibal corpse vids, death...whatever, anything technical.

but still laugh at them afterwards.

I tryed that, but they don't listen. They have no idea how a guitar works or anything. They claim the vocals take no talent, and the music is just hitting random notes fast, no matter what you do. I mean come on...even when somebody is singing they say they're yelling. Does putting power into your fucking singing voice mean your yelling? I don't think so.

1. make sure you're parents are sitting relaxed in the living room, with no clue of what lurks in the near future
2. go get some holy cd with the best guitar solos and stunning drums or whatever else you choose
3. make sure the stereo is in the same room as your parents with the speakers close to their ears
4. supersurprise them by putting on the record on critical volume
5. go insane, headbanging on tables and spinning wildy on the floor while playing air guitar and scream with the vocals so hard that you get a hardon.. and when that's done and when your parents probably are having heartattack you say: "that's why I love metal" etc.

And they probably won't say much...
