Actually I think Down's first album 'NOLA'is probably much closer to stoner rock than the groove/sludge sound that they went with on II and III.

I've never really got into Down but I've always considered them to be somewhere between Southern rock/metal, and "groove" (which isn't a term I like). Though saying that, they do have their doomy moments... but they're definitely not straight doom, in any sense.

The Wizar'd

They're a Aussie doom band and quite popular despite the vocals. I got given their album on my birthday by a dude who runs a label and put this album out. Its quite enjoyable now and again.
