Ok, first off, I'll say that I'm not looking for a smartass answer or anything. I'm just curious.
I'm not the biggest Dream Theater fan, but I occasionally listen to Scenes of a Memory. Basically, I was just wondering what is so terrible about them. I've seen numerous accounts of people here bashing them. Most people don't seem to loathe a band just because they don't like their style. Petrucci and Portnoy are very technically proficient with their instruments and are pretty much legends to aspiring guitarists and drummers, but I will say that they could be much better with the talent they have.
So, I'm not looking for "they suck" or anything like that. Just, maybe list a few reasons you think they're so bad. Maybe I'm missing something? :erk:

This thread = :erk:

Btw, it's probably the singer, among a few other things. Many people (like me) enjoy the technicality of the band, but apparently lots of people think there isn't much "emotion" and it's a "wankfest" just to show off the band's skills. That's why people here don't like them.

^The emotion is forced, and the obvious wankfest destroys any possibilities of good songwriting results...but i don't think that Dt blows that hard, ''Images'' and ''Awake'' are good, the rest is terrible.

Even though i like Images and Words, LaBrie should get castrated for trying to sound like Geddy Lee in some songs...of course he fails, Geddy should sue him tbh, some of the melodies are blatant Rush rip offs. You might think i'm crazy but if you listen carefully you will notice the similarities.

I listened to three albums so far from this band. The only one I have a problem with is Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence. I really loved The Glass Prison but the rest of the album bores me so badly. I coundn't make it through the entire album sadly. To me the album sounds too much like mainstream rock instead of metal. Images And Words is a good album. I liked that album. The album Train Of Thought is an album I listen to A LOT. An amazing CD. In The Name Of God is definitly my favorite song from the band. The rest of the CDs I have yet to own. As long as it doesn't sound like Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence I will not have a problem at all (not including The Glass Prison).

Images and Words was excellent except possibly the incredibly cheesy Another Day.

I think it is a pretty song, but yeah...cheesy as fuck and the Kenny G sax is horrid, almost ruins the entire thing.
