Actually, im a big DT fan... as much as i am of Opeth
I also visit the DT forum often and EVERYBODY love Opeth's music. That's where i discovered the Opeth...
My conclusion is that DT fans are simply more open minded to different style of music. People that only like death metal and can't appreciaty a "cheesy" (even if there's nothing cheesy about Dream Theater IMO) song suck!
What do you think of that?

People that think DT lyrics are cheesy obviously don't have a gf that subjects them to show tunes. Ok people, go listen to some random show tunes. Just about ANY will do. All but the mightiest of play productions will cause your asshole to crinkle when you hear the ridiculous almost consistent-across-the-board style of vocal "I'm singing everything that is happening to my character even though you can plainly fucking tell what's going on without it being forcefed to you" delivery. Then go back and listen to DT. You won't fucking care anymore.

...except that's the premise behind the showtune. A better way of putting it would be just saying, "They're cheesy as hell," and that's all that's necessary.
