my friend handed me one riverside album...i dont remember the name and i only listened to it once. and it wasnt bad.

I just bought Octavarium, mainly because it was so cheap. like 8 Euro or something, that's strange because it's quite new!
well, there are parts that I find enjoyable. I'm always interested in complex instrumental songs/sections and they do a lot of that stuff...also I'm a fan of Petrucci actually, and I really dig his latest solo record.
the problem I have with DT is....LA BRIE! for all the obvious reasons, already listed above.
and btw, has anyone read the lyrics to "The Answer Lies Within" (Octavarium)??? that has got to be some of cheesiest shit ever!

The thing with DT is that you have to expect the gallons of cheese and try to overlook it. I'm at the point now where if the music's good....then everything else takes a back seat. I attempt to ignore DT's lyrics (which isn't easy) and concentrate solely on the playing.
And although there are easily 48,902,847 better metal singers than LaBrie, he has toned it down nicely over the past 4 releases. Because of that, DT is no longer a bitter pill difficult to swallow. And their last 4 albums are awesome!
To this day, every now and then, I try (once again) to make it through "Awake". But I find that to be an impossible task. After 10 minutes of cringing at his vocals, I simply can't bear it anymore.

With a sound that's best described as a mix of Anathema, Porcupine Tree, Floyd, and a smattering of Opeth, you can't go wrong! But sound aside, they deliver the goods by being great songwriters!

Actually, im a big DT fan... as much as i am of Opeth
I also visit the DT forum often and EVERYBODY love Opeth's music. That's where i discovered the Opeth...
My conclusion is that DT fans are simply more open minded to different style of music. People that only like death metal and can't appreciaty a "cheesy" (even if there's nothing cheesy about Dream Theater IMO) song suck!
What do you think of that?
