Drumming part deux

Ok, so I have to disagree with you twice here. First, you would say that Lopez' creativity outshines Danny Carey's? Also, have you heard Devin Townsend's Terria? Hoglan can do mellow stuff quite well. He's huge...and smokes too. That shows his ability as a drummer. He doesn't really have to exert himself to achieve his goal. It's all in the mechanics.

1. Yes, I think Martin Lopez' creativity outshines that of Danny Carey. I think Martin is a better drummer. So shoot me.

2. Yes, I have Terria (and all of Dev's other albums bar 'Physicist'). And I don't think that Gene's drumming is all that great, to be honest. I don't think that's what he's designed for. But like he says himself 'legs this big shouldn't be able to move this fast'. The man is a phenomenon of nature, as far as I'm concerned.

3. I have recently been enjoying the drumming of Trym :)

I dont really think Danny Carey is that creative either tbh, or at least not in the Tool stuff I've heard (Lateralus plus a few older tracks from random albums). Nothing incredibly groundbreaking plus for a band supposedly driven by drums he doesnt use that much variety either.

From that list I'd say Hellhammer. He makes it look so easy, but I guess any of them could win.

If Keith Moon were still alive, he'd stomp all of them. Nick Barker could give all those guys a run for their $$$ also.

George Kollias. Can blow away pretty much everybody mentioned here. You won't find better drumming than on the AotW album.

Just like guitarists, I feel technical virtuoso showoffs (Lang, Portnoy etc) should be killed for all doing the same shit, just competing speeds.

Honestly, I think AOTW kind-of fails in the drumming department. Burning Pits of the Duat is the only track that really stands out (to me) on drums. I'm not taking anything away from George, because he certainly is a very capable drummer (from watching some of the videos in his studio and live, and reading the stories Karl put in the AOTW book), but I think Laureano's performance on ITDS was better.

Just my opinion.

I find what you said a bit of an oxymoron.

I know George is incredibly fast, having seen him live and having listened extensively to all of Nile's stuff, but he really does fancy himself from what I've read in interviews/articles with him, Nile and many other bands.

I think a lot of his drumming is very showy, not to say that it's bad, but I'm just pointing out that perhaps he shows off more than Portnoy for instance.
