DT+SX shows setlist

Was there too. Kinda weird that Symx weren't even mentioned in the tickets and one guy asked my bro "is there some opener band?" haha. And yea expected them to play atleast 45 mins. But seemed like many ppl liked them, atleast it was probably one of the biggest audiences Symx have played for.

DT's set wasn't that good either, if u ask me...
 
<rant>I had so much shit from people when I pointed out that the European set would only be half an hour or so. I'm pretty fucked off to be honest. In this instance, I hate being proved right, but to add insult to injury it's not even a particularly good set.

I'm not blaming the band for a second. I'm just venting frustration, so if you've got a problem with that move on.

I guess I'll be going to see Paul Merton that night instead afterall.

I remember when I saw that show. Some dude next to me with a bunch of his buddies asked me what the opening band sounded like. I'm like "it's great, heavy and neoclassical." He's all like "neoclassical? Damn, that sucks." After Inferno was over, him and his friends were telling me how awesome they were. They liked Church of the Machine and Awakenings even more. I'm pretty sure they purchased The Odyssey afterwards.
 
It's DT's tour. Certainly, a half hour set is disappointing, but SymX has to play by DT's rules. Bottom line, this tour is an excellent opportunity for exposure, & a chance to play in venues they haven't had a chance to play on their own yet.

Yet.

Obviously the two bands have a lot of overlap in their fanbases, and you know how you can hear a band's music & not be overly thrilled, but then you see them & they kick your ass all over? I'm betting that a lot of those DT-fan-but-not-SymX-fan folks will be experiencing that exact thing once they see our boys hit the stage. And the next time SymX comes to town, they'll be saying 'OMG that's the band that opened for DT, we have to go see them'..and so on and so on.

Our boys are on the rise, there's no doubt about it..hang in there and they'll get the acclaim that we know they deserve, in due time. :)
 
I attended the show in Stockholm and it was fantastic. The setlist was exactly like the one in finland +"of sins and shadows" (poor ol' finns :)) which is my favourite SX song :kickass:. So i guess the set was about 40-42 minutes. Like in finland the guitar volume was too low but it was okey. By the way Russel Allen must be the greatest metal vocalist ever all categories. He was on fire.
DT did their thing and it was almost as good except for the extremly boring keyboard solo that everyone but me seemed to love :loco:.

Naturally Queensryche fans would love Symphony X. The responce to neo classical could have been two things - not knowing what neo classical was such as picturing some orchestra with a light show :lol: or the Yngwie thing. While many of us thought he was an awsome player we were never rolled over by much of his song writing. Thats just my personal speculation. Romeo & crew took care of this aspect of neo classical and Allen iced the cake.

Anyone who says Symphony X sucks should be bled dry.

yep, the one thing for sure that sucks is when idiots start throwing insults and the suck word all over town.

Vix - you were right and I never could have possibly believed this. But still you missed my point and thats a shame, my fault for not conveying that properly. Sorry! Just remember some of us here (states), while we may have been awed and had a great time, still had some major disappointments. Time and sound quality and we had no inspireing band such as SX to open our shows.

SX is becoming a mysterious band to me for many reasons. I dont get the short show thing and Im not just talking about this European tour and what ever reason for the 35 minute set. I dont get the muddy sound quality. Not from a band of this level of knowledge and tecnical ability. I dont get their lack of exposure for being on the market since 95. Im just guessing but most of the band members age must be into their 30's ? Its been 10 years since Divine Wings, they should be well into their popularity and peaking. In my book they have 6 kick ass studio recordings yet only a small scale following. I know the music scene is and has been changing but all these things I just dont get. At this point its "whats next?" another album and another tour ? Maybe they'll make the rounds again with a larger audience and bigger show ? Maybe things about about to happen, we can only hope so.
 
I left the venue after Symphony X had played. I was very glad to see Symphony X live even if I paid 53 euros for the ticket. I could've and would've paid even more.

Can't wait for the Symphony X tour. I hope they will place one of their gigs in Finland, there's lots of fans here.
 
What an awesome concert it was last night in Stockholm! I missed some of the SymX songs but I heard the ending of Serpent's Kiss and the rest of their set. As someone mentioned the guitar was difficult to hear but holy shit they rocked so hard. Russell Allen has to be the best vocalist to ever have lived because he sings just as good live as in studio. Really good entertainers!

This is the SymX forum but I have to share the Dream Theater-experience anyway. It was epic as hell and Labrie was awesome. They played a lot of cool songs, both old and new, and they even played a medley of some of my favourite songs finishing off with Octavarium. The ending solo was nothing short of amazing! It was the first time I saw them both and it has to be my favourite concert ever. Or maybe that's just because it was yesterday and I'm still excited over the show. Anyway it was a kick-ass evening.

What mystifies me is that Jordan Rudess is capable of unbelievable musical quality when improvising. Why he feels the need to play a piece of crap fake guitar-esque solo (because lord knows there aren't enough wanky guitar solos in a DT set), and then wail on the Continuum is beyond me. Stop making noise and start making music. When he just chills out at the keyboard, amazing things come out. He's gotta get over this recent fascination with sound effects. I don't go to a DT show to hear the sonic equivalent of the Space Ghost theme. There are way too many DT fans who have simply convinced themselves that anything that comes out of those guys is good, and they don't even make objective judgments about if they like a solo or not - it's just automatically interpreted as amazing. Though amazing musicians, they are by no means invulnerable to sucking.
 
Bah... Musically, maybe some people just take things as they come and accept what ever it is and others spend way to much time looking for what they need to give them something to bitch about. After all progressive music is hardly about sticking to a few formulas or ideas that work for everyone

Soulless? If he likes what he is playing, then he put his soul to it?

Unemotional Wanking? What makes slow solo where u ring each note 5 secs any more emotional than playing fast notes after another, they are both just techniques afterall?

I like their playing in general and the so called "instrumental wanking" is just cool stuff as I hear it. I thought it was pretty cool when Rudess started playing that hand-held synth actually, although I like it better when he plays piano-style, like the keyboard solo on "Live Scenes from New York". IMO the thing that sets a mindless solo apart from a good one is that the latter was made with some thought involved and it fits the song. The guys in DT know how to write great music and they time their playing in the songs in a good way, that's what sets them apart from a lot of bands. Same goes for SymX, their solo's fit the songs perfectly.
 
yeah i can't see there playing as mindless or wankery because it just sonds cool but Rudess needs to let go of that keypad and stick with his oasys or better yet his old Kurtzweil 2600.

why did kevin leave in the first pace? i heard he was an asshole?
 
Don't get me wrong; I like a lot of DT's stuff. But sometimes the overly drawn-out instrumental sections (see The Dark Eternal Night, The Ministry of Lost Souls) drag the song way downhill for me. Symphony X may throw a solo in just because Romeo or Pinnella wants to solo, but everything seems to flow a lot better, and it fits the song. Half the time with DT I get the distinct impression that the solo is there for no other purpose than to show off; key changes are thrown in for the sole purpose of solos in different keys. In the Presence of Enemies pt. 2 is a perfect example - once the instrumental section starts, you've got like 5-7 minutes of wank to navigate through before reaching the melodic ending reprise. Same with The Ministry of Lost Souls... talk about dragging a song downhill!

Of course, you may consider the above opinion completely absurd when I tell you that Train of Thought is my favorite DT album. Who would've thought?!
