Dungeons & Dragons

No Care Ever
So the band that's been here for the past 4 weeks has gotten me into 4th edition Dungeons & Dragons. I've always been a nerd, but this has brought me to a whole new level. I know its 2010, but i find pen and paper gaming pretty fun, even with a PS3 and Xbox 360 in the same room that we're playing in.

I'm sure there are other D&D players here, seeing as how metal and fantasy go hand in hand. yes?

It became untr00 when they streamlined the system post-2nd edition (the one all the awesome PCRPGS were based on). There is something magical and endearing about doing rolls and subtractions that made utterly no sense.

Shit like this makes me sick to my stomach wondering how the death penalty wouldn't be justified.

Ermz, the Pokemon fad over here actually knocked Magic off it's throne, and then Yugi-oh is what the faggy little kids who weren't old enough to have witness the Pokemon craze but were faggy enough to be into that shit decided to pick up. Such a weird thing... its a card game about people playing card games?

Magic never had anything on D&D. Sure, you can throw cards around... while we actually had have stories and characters that (when done properly) would be interesting even without the game. D&D was to the typical fantasy epic storytelling as jazz was to a night at the symphony - it could, sadly, degenerate to a bunch of number-crunching and monotony (and now that it's WoW with pencils, it probably will do so even more often), but on a good night there's just no comparison.

Brian, toss that 4ed heresy out the window. You can now get 3.5 stuff cheap now that 4 is out (the only decent contribution to gaming that it seems 4 will ever be able to make) and then when you've learned the ropes and gotten used to more complicated systems (and, if lucky, sneakily pushed a 3ed Monk into a 3.5 game) move to AD&D like a real man.

Wow! I'm not the only table top rpg nerd here! But seriously guys! Throw away the filth that is dungeons and dragons!! There are literally thousands of other games out there that does things a million times better.

White Wolf games are much easier to handle in some ways, and they don't degenerate into gear- and stat-building circle jerks as easily, but D&D isn't without its perks (and I suspect that you may exaggerate both numbers in your post). It's an easy common ground and leaves plenty of options open.

I started on 2nd edition, ended up switching to 3rd.. I tried 4th Edition but it is just way to streamlined and "dumbed down" comparitively...

God I miss THAC0!

I played Neverwinter Nights for the PC if that counts.

Neverwinter was probably about as close a PC game got I think.. But I didn't play it much... I was more into Baldur's Gate... I may actually have to buy these again... don't know why, just have the urge

As the old guy here that grew up in the 70's and 80's, I was a big AD&D kid. I have very fond memories of being the DM of a very lengthy Greyhawk campaign with four of my best friends. We used to have a room setup in the basement of my house that we would spend like 6 hours on a Saturday night going through adventure after adventure. Gary Gygax is the man!!!! Anyone else remember "The Temple of Elemental Evil" modual - thats what got me started with the Greyhawk world.

While I have not played in probably 12 years or so - I used to play with my stepson and some of his friends when they were a bit younger - they needed a DM so I ran them through a campaign for a while. I still have all my books and shit tucked away on my bookshelves in my home studio. Not a big fan of post 2nd edition rules - liked the simplicity of earlier editions despite the fact that later editions provided a more intuitive system of play.

OK - there is my geeky post for the day.
