Dungeons & Dragons

woah...this is one of those threads that i can't understand one word you guys are saying. dungeons? MTG cards? AD&D?

it's like talking to my brother about 1176's, Distressors, MD421's, 6L6's...he'll probably think im a nerd...oh wait...hahah:lol:

Planescape: Torment was great, I'd play that before Baldur's Gate.

Jeff

YES. I always want to replay that game, but feel I'm not worthy to sit there soaking in the beautifully weaved story and characters. One of the best games of all time IMO. Tied up at the top with Fallout 2.

As a bit of trivia, I read an interview with Chris Avellone recently where he talked about making Kreia from KOTOR2 an extension of Ravel from Torment. He always wanted to play up her character more, so he basically wrote her into the Star Wars universe. Worked out pretty cool methinks.

I had no idea that Kreia was written like that - it's not a surprise, really, but that character won awards like 'Most Awesome Character Holy Assballs I Just Shat A Porcupine' and is a huge part of why KOTOR2 was worth playing.

Just wished they would have completed the story. The droid planet, etc

Yeah, that was pretty bad... there were third-party projects to make the game what it should have been but I haven't kept track of those lately.

Jeff

I played D&D, Shadowrun (gay system, great setting) and Vampire:The Masquerade (awesome!), and a bunch of friends and me recently purchased Call of Cthulhu.. I hope it's good.
I HATE what they did to Vampire in the new system (the Requiem) btw, clans are not important, Nosferatu not ugly, there is no Sabbath or Camarilla... What the fuck?

That bothered me as well, especially since playing a Malkavian became less fun than just being a little mad in real life. The other White Wolf worlds can still be fun, though...

Jeff

Haha, Malks are also my favorites :D

I quite believe the other White Wolf stuff is fun - I read the whole World of Darkness book and liked it, but then began to read the Requiem and almost threw up. Fortunately we were able to exchange it and buy CoC instead.

I was quite interested in D&D as a kid, and I think I still have the 3rd edition box somewhere. Then I tried it, and soon realized it was like watching an awkward play where a bunch of nerdy kids were playing heroic (or tiny and bearded) characters in a way that made me want to roll a D20 fatally into my own eye.

I understand and somewhat agree with you, but role playing can be a very rewarding, mature and creative experience if it is done with the focus of creating a good story. Think of it as improv theater minus the audience and with a set of guidelines.
I've been playing role playing games for over 15 years now, and my tastes in games and subjects have drastically changed over the years. It's called growing up.

Call me a nerd if you want. I admit that I can be quite nerdy on several levels, but I'm still an adult, socially aware and intelligent person. Role playing games is a hobby i can see myself exploring for the rest of my life and tbh, I look forward to discovering all the great stories that I have in wait with th rest of my "nerdy" friends. :dopey:

^ Agreed.

@ Jarkko: perhaps your group was just kinda crap? :) the quality of play depends entirely on the quality of people involved.

And nerdy or not, I'd rather see a group of people enjoying a good role-play session and create their own experience than see them sit down to watch some hollywood pre-packaged movie.

Exactly!! I've never seen a movie that has brought me the satisfaction that a good role playing session with good friends that are on the exact same page as yourself have.

No worries. My post wasn't really directed at you, except for the part that I agree that grown men playing dungeons and dragons and only cares about "killing stuff" is kinda sad. I just wanted to throw out there that roleplaying can be rewarding and fun for mature players as well.
And i've never played dungeons and dragons. That game has never appealed to me.

This thread reminds me - one of my favorite things to do on a Saturday afternoon is head down to one of the local parks and get drunk while watching the LARPers go at it for a couple hours.

Great, now I want to fly out to California just to do that. (It's not happening around here.)
