Youtube has grown so much that almost everyone that have a camera feels the need to record something, even if it´s something that no one cares.
I guess in these modern times of internet, almost everyone feels that have something to say. Internet it´s the voice of the voiceless, everyone is entitled with some opinion about this or about that.

Anyfuckingway, the other day I was seeing a video of a guy called Jared Dines and someones said that he is becoming predictable because he is knocking the same jokes a lot and he replies that´s what happens when he puts 3/4 videos a weeks. It was something in those terms.

Only after this I realised that he is living of youtube videos or of the subscriptions, dont know for sure the methods to be paid by youtube.

Now something that has made me thinking, doesnt this shit of upload a lot of videos a week, kills the creativity? In the case of Jared dines and Rob scallon, I think these guys started because they wanted to show some kind of creativity related to the music but probably in order to earn enough money to do a living they are uploading shit everytime that reduces the quality and creativity.

Now there are a lot of people trying to do the same, everyone has a channels puting shit all the time, it´s becoming overloaded with shit. Even glenn fricker of this forum is puting a lot of videos a week and I like his videos quite a lot but seems that he is also trying hard to be part of the paid ones! But I could be wrong about that.

What are your thoughts about this subject?

Look at how many fucking views that is.. 180 174 139 views.. It's fucking insane.. I think she has videos with more views..

I don't blame people for trying to make money, cause you never know their situation..
But there are asshats that steal others stuff and reposts it, puts out really shitty stuff, or they just spam videos..
I'd love to get paid for what I do (haven't put out anything yet), but I don't expect to get paid..

I watch some speedruns (finishing a game as fast as you can using glitches or anything that is in the game) and I think a lot more effort is put into that when it comes to entertainment and value.. some people stream for hours and hours finishing a game like Zelda Windwaker that takes almost exactly 4 hours, and they do commentary, etc..

I think some have had hybris here thinking they can put out anything and people will just eat it up..

I think I've been watching the same fuckers for about a decade, or it feels that way. All of them living off youtube for years. Also, shirts and crap they pimp on their channels. There are people, in particular, girls/woman, that play video games in a low cut shirt/whatever, the point is tits, and have million/s of viewers. Banking with tits and video games. Who would watch that more than a couple times for 2 mins? IDK, but they do. :loco:

Oh, and now they also use https://www.patreon.com. People basically give them money. There are feminist that do nothing but bitch about men and or the "patriarchy" that get 3-5k a month from that. It bends my mind momentarily and then I remember what planet I'm living on. Silly fucking apes.
 
I make a one or two hundred a month on my youtube channels (DAW tutorials, pedal demos and DOTA 2 vids mostly), nothing to live off of but it covers my vices. Anyone can make money on youtube but you have to be pretty committed to make a living.

I do not like Jared Dines and some other youtubers like him, stuff feels played out pretty quick and the videos are often just clickbait, but I respect their hustle. HOWEVER, there are people who straight up go and upload music or a full album from a band on youtube and then monetize it with ads until it gets flagged and taken down and those people fucking suck. I've seen whole channels were people just monetize other people's videos, you always notice when a video goes viral how the sidebar is full of recommendations that are just reuploads of the same video.
 
YouTube is about as meritocratic as you can get when it comes to making money on the internet.

Nobody pays to watch, YouTube is free to users. So if they're watching your content it is because they're choosing to.

Video stealing is fucking bullshit. But running a monetized channel for original content is fine. Good luck to the guys who do it. Personally I think doing a music channel based around original music is tough to keep the pace with the quality staying high enough. Genres like video games are a bit easier if you have the right personality and work ethic as the games already exist. There are a lot of people trying to make it in that genre though, so it has its own difficulties in terms of hitting enough subs/views to make a living from it.

From what I can tell, the guys making a full time living work full time hours, it is a job.

Sure is and should be mentioned. Hours editing alone, well for most of them.

People like Rebecca Watson I don't think put much time into youtube, though I could be wrong.


You probably don't want to look her up due to health hazards but if bleeding out of your eyes and ears is your thing, well.
 
From my conversations with Ola, it seems that only the highest tier of content creators on there can sustain a full time living solely from streams. The guys sitting on the mid-end (30k-150k views per video) essentially have to use that exposure to sell merch or other products/services.

What's your YT channel name? I love DAW tutorials.
 
Say you get 1 million views a month. Assume no one used adblock and every video played an ad.
1,000,000 / 1,000 for the adsense RPM = 1,000 payable views
Depending on you RPM which can fluctuate daily. Mine's been as low as $0.25 per thousand and as high as $20 per thousand.
You'll make anywhere between like $250-20k that month.

Jared dines had 5 million views July. Assuming every single view played an ad and no one used adblock he'd make anywhere between $1000-100k.
Rob Scallon had 2.5 million so he made $500-$50k July.
RPM's rarely go $20 per thousand and tons of people use adblock and sometimes ads don't play so they're definitely on the lower end of that range.

Most people now use a Patreon page along with their Youtube account. Rob Scallon gets about $630 per video from people who sign up to donate.
Walk Off The Earth's Patreon gets $15k per music video they upload from 1400 people who signed up to donate.
 
With something like Youtube you really are having to appeal to the masses if you are using it primarily to make money.

I have monetized what I can and I have around 200k total views which amounts to something like $0.5.
 
Nice to read from people who have some insight in this subject. As almost other work, here seems the same, to do a living strictly from youtube videos, it has to be taken like a normal job but not only, like Random3 said, it has to have a content that appeal to the masses. Not like those john doe´s who do album reviews like they had some background and knowledge to do it, because opinions everyone has one but to do a review, it needs much more IMO.
 
For quick reference, up to a few years ago, the revenue was around 1 dollar for 2000 views. I don't remember if ad clicks and ad views were counted in that, but it's more or less how you can calculate things as far as I know.

1M views = 500 dollars before tax
 
In his case, I don't think he had any knowledge of how to make money. He himself states that all he ever did was yelling and having fun in front of his computer. He just has this genuine funny way of having fun which people like, and the fact he is a good looking Swedish guy just sealed the deal !
He recently got flamed for stating how much he earns, but the truth is as much as he doesn't even think himself he deserved it, it's just how it is and he gets views because people like his videos. He did a video just to react about this and I think he did well. Nothing to flame about, it's not even like it is the worse inequality in the world. I personally don't mind, there has to be a number one YouTube creator, it's just how things work with high numbers and statistics and it happens to be him. I'd rather see someone who makes funny video which help people have a bit of sunshine in their daily life. I respect that more than sports superstars paid hundreds of millions (not against sports stars being rich, but I think the top tier reach indecent levels that should be capped, just like many other positions in our societies) and behave like spoiled kids (we are specialists in France for that).

This is little more than a case of being in the right place at the right time. He's a relatively old YouTuber, and not many people at the time were doing what he was doing, and the few that were did it in a very contrived, mediocre way. He basically won the YouTube lottery.
 
I like You Tube for help with replacing struts on my van, but that's about it.

Everyone's an attention seeking comedian today looking to score the easy life making cheap retarded video's.

I come from a pre-internet generation, so I really don't get the allure.

If you can make a buck doing it, more power to you!
 
my channel has like 1.7 million views or so and I made a total of like 69€ or so....not worth it for me.

then again I'm really retarded when it comes to this whole business thing and making money, so who knows....
