Earth Crisis Hell on Earth tour 2009 tour report

I did FOH for Earth Crisis on their last tour through Europe the past month. I wrote a tour report and thought I'd share it with you guys. A long read with a lot of nerd content I guess...

And if you're interested in how it sounded: in the soundclick player on my myspace there's a live recording from the last show in Saarbrücken (D)

Enjoy!

We started off using 2 5150's. Eric player played on the green channel (gain on 9), Scott on the red (gain on 3).
Eric's 5150 broke down after a week or so, then he switched to a 3 channel recto with 6L6 tubes, using the orange channel. That one broke down later too and he switched to a two channel recto using EL34's, also playing the orange channel.

edit: yeah, both used a standard 1960 cab.

It's not a bad combination in my opinion...and it's near identical the guitar sound on the album.
For the album they used a 5150 and a Marshall, both modded by FJA, through 2 1960 cabs.

Which album is that you're talking about?

For the last one I'm pretty sure they used a Randall and a 5150, no Marshall's. There where two JCM2000's on the tour too, but they stayed in the case all the time, except when we swapped the recto tubes with the tubes from one of the Marshalls.

The last one. I asked them on myspace and they said:
"We used a modified Peavey 5150 and a modified Marshall JCM 800. They were modified by FJA Mods. We ran both heads at the same time and had 4 mics on 2 cabinets. The cabs were 2 Marshall 1960a. We just did 1 left and 1 right for most of It, but doubled parts we wanted to stand out."

Tue Madsen didn't reamp the guitar sound and he used the recorded tracks.

I saw them here in Austin a few months ago and they had these X-shaped guitar cabs. Really cool looking...any idea who made these?

Oh yeah, you're right, I remembered wrong...

I liked the EL34 recto combined with the 5150 the most, that's also what you hear on the live recording (recto left, 5150 right)

I don't know who made the X cabs, I believe they do mention it on their myspace page.

Sorry for old-thread resurrection, but i stumbled upon this thread by accident, and i missed this back then and am currently reading all those blogs which are amazing !

I was at the show @Le Gibus in Paris, first ExC show for me (i went to see them especially) when i've been listening to them since the "breed the killers" days, loved the show, guitar tone especially was sick.
I think at some point i asked you (OP) what mics you used on guitar cabs during the show or something (you told me ATsomething (AT2020 ? not sure) and maybe some other stuff). Also didn't realize it was actually Mike Justian filling in on drums ! The dude is a sick drummer, mainly for his The Red Chord/Unearth stuff !

This is a video from the show (i can be seen in the front row sometimes :) ) :

EDIT : the new ExC album, "neutralize the threat", is SICK !

Also, that show had indeed way too many bands (8 ?), ending up in the crowd being kind of jaded and empty and lifeless for the last bands who were headlining... such a shame...

Yeah, Mike is a sick drummer. He actually broke his kick pedal 3 times during that tour and he would just finish the show with 1 foot (I actually believe he finished 2 shows with just his left foot) and he would play the double bass parts heal toe with just one foot. If you didn't know you wouldn't even notice a difference.

I was using AE2500's on guitars that tour, still my favorite guitar mic, mainly for downtuned stuff!

hello,

pretty cool report and sound on the clip.

what outboard gear you used for everything?

Thanks for the info !

Also, i'm almost halfway through your blog entries now, and those are an awesome read since it really tells you about how hard touring is and everything, and the difficulties you meet when doing live sound every night for a band (different gear, acoustics, being late so no soundcheck, dB limitations, broken gear, ...).
