EMG on Bass

A lot have been said about EMG pickups mounted on guitars, but what do you think of EMG on basses?

Are they good? Too compressed? 5, 6, 4 strings?

I recently bought an relatively cheap EMG 8-string bass.
Since I want to use it also as a backup solution until my warwick is repaired I removed the octave strings on the lower strings and put my normal thick strings on it.
I was impressed about the sound! And as I said a 700 Euro asian model.

I began to think to use is it as my main bass. B und E string normal strings without octave strings and A und D strings with ovtave strings. But this works only in my main band where low bass-parts and higher melodies are separated to play them only on one type of string.
