right guys, i've decided i'm going to spend some money on new gear. i have 2 options, either i can get a peavy 5150 (second hand), or i can get an engl screamer/thunder (50 watts, probably second hand).
It boils down to this; if i get the engl, will it be loud enough for gigs/practise? also, last time i checked, the 5150 is actually a really good sounding amp, but is it as good as an engl?

thoughts/feedback please :)

I always saw the screamer/thunder as more of a rock amp, and 5150 as a metal amp.

Volume wise there won't be that much difference, 50W is plenty enough

oh wow as if josh from sylosis is on here!
ahh, ok, 5150's are nice, i know, but, check this out, and try telling me that is not an amazing sound? and i think of other bands that have recorded with the 5150's, annotations of an autopsy, bring me the horizon, a few others, like proper produced albums, and i'm just not as impressed by that sound as the sample above.

that said, i would still love either amp :)
thanks for the feedback guys!

True but depends who's recording it though. The first BMTH album (if thats the one you're on about) was pretty poorly recorded and the AOAA album guitar tracking was done by Stu at Studio 6 with a bit of an odd mic set up. New Sylosis album was all 5150.

As is all old In Flames stuff, tons of Andy's production (Anthems of Rebellion is 5150/XXX), good god, it's like THE melo-death amp!

you guys used 5150's eh? just checked out the track on the myspace page, i am impressed, but i am having a REAL hard time telling which one sounds better.. aha. well, given that i know the mic set up in the clip i linked, and i reckon they're affordable too, what mics were you guys using?
thanks for helping :)

Damn I personally would have thought more people would have said ENGL! I really want to try an ENGL Fireball/Powerball out. Anyways, you can't go wrong with a Peavey! Brutal Tones.

I like my 5150 infinitely more than my Engl Blackmore, I think I'm with Josh on the overall Engl verdict... At first it blew me away but then I started to notice little things I didn't like until eventually that's all I could hear... The 5150 is tried and true, amp is awesome.

Not impressed by this clip at all... Tone on the new Sylosis for example kills this!

hmm, i was really expecting everybody to say engl, i am quite suprised!
currently have a valve king (i just needed an amp for practise, as my previous amp stopped working..), which i thought was.. mediocre at best. but hey, only cost £295. aha. thanks for the feedback guys!

I'm not suggesting this is you're reason for thinking this but a lot of people get sidetracked by the price tag instead of going with their ears.

My rigs less than half the price of a mate who has diezel n engl stuff and my tone (IMO) slays it. I find diezels etc have no aggression and are really flat sounding - nice 'tone' eq wise, but so smooth that there's no attack in the midrange

I'd say, if it aint a Engl Invader, dont bother, as the rest are just average in my eyes. Invader is on my shopping list currently, but i'm not sayin its better than a 5150, no way. 5150, best amp period, for recording anyway.

And Savage, come on now! I've never heard anything that wasn't awesome from that amp...

There is no better chunk than an Engl Invader. $3000 though. I haven't heard the Engl you want. Check out an Invader. Just plug right the fuck into it. No OD. Bricks will be shat! A used 5150 and OD808 for under a $1000 though. You can't beat that.
