I just noticed that I've never actually heard how you say for example "in 9/8" or "in 7/4", ie. the actual time signatures. Is it for example "nine by eight", "nine eights", "seven in four" or what?

I guess it is said just by the numbers, ie. 7/4 = seven four time, 13/8 = thirteen eight time, 15/16 = fifteen sixteen time

yeah us englsih are'nt too good with numbers so we make it sound as cool as we can...try 13/16 that sucks! Fucking dream theatre. Whatever you do stay away from 12/8 only one band can pull that off without sounding like pirates and thats mastadon.
