Animatrix dvd huh? Interesting! What I have seen of it, it is very dark and moody so I can see where you're coming from somewhat....

Have you seen the Triplets of Belleview?

Kind of a neat movie, the music is pretty cool, and the animation is phenomenal. No crap like anime.

It's a French film about a tour de france cyclist that is kidnapped by evil henchmen, and has to be saved by three old eccentric jazz divas.
