Where'd you guys first hear of or listen to any of your favorite metal bands? When did it all start for you guys?

For me, a friend of mine had done some of his own research on the internet and he was like, "dude, check this out!" My first metal experience was accompanied by the Kick Ass sounds of Iced Earth and Stratovarius.

let me know. :headbang:

I have to give all credit to my brother for brainwashing and molding me into The Metal Chick I now am :D When I was young, we would drive around and listen to UFO's Phenomenon album and sing along to it. I have a picture of me as a baby sitting in his room surrounded by KISS posters and the like lol!! :tickled: He really got me into metal with Metallica, and ever since then he just hits me with band after band. It's a shame he doesn't talk to me anymore :( Those were good times...

Mostly by myself. I started listening to music because of Alice in Chains. Then a friend of mine told me about a band called symphony x, but he couldnt burn me a copy because his cd cracked. So there I was one day in Sam Goody and lo and behold there was V just staring at me. It was a blind purchase (and probably my most momentous in my life for music). Needless to say i really liked the band. A little after I finally got the internet and searched for other bands like symphony x and then the seed of curiosity for metal began to sprout

I like that story a lot.

A friend of mine's dad runs a local comic/game/book store. I go up there to play games and such and the started bringing in all sorts of old cd's he had purchased and listened to. He was selling them on the side for cheap cause he buys cd's from century media and other such companies at business prices (since he runs a business). There were so many different bands that I had never heard of and he told me about the progressive metal genre. I had already been getting into japanese rock music and my favorite of them was X-Japan. They used a lot of violins/piano in their metal rock music and I had become a great fan of music done in that kind of a style. I would be playing games at the store and he would blast the different kinds of prog metal as me and my friends played. I kinda started liking the unique sound then. He had a brand new copy of V and I recalled him giving me a preview of it a few days earlier and hearing the first two tracks. I loved the blend of metal and orchestrated sounds and not knowing how much I would like them I bought it. I now of course love the band but have in the meantime discovered many other great groups. He lets me borrow cd's and preview them in hopes of me buying them. I have only borrowed like twice but each time I have bought them. I love that I can get just about any cd I want from him at about a 15-17 dollar price range. The cd store doesn't carry three quarters of the groups I listen to and if they did they would charge me like 20 bucks.

I was exposed to metal at the lucky age of 13.

A few cousins of mine were already listening to groups like Sepultura and Pantera. I liked 'em, but I pushed farther and discovered death and doom metal acts like Amorphis and Mercyful Fate.

For a period of three years, I became dormant in the scene. After discovering Symphony X, Angra and Tiamat, my interest in metal as a whole was revitalized.

yeah, I was lucky enough to discover metal at the age of 14 myself - I'm almost 18 now.

Hey Yngster, ever think of introducing your friends to the glory of metal?

I fell in love with the sound of a distorted guitar in 1985 when Back to the Future came out. But the first band that really got me into heavier music was.............
Def Leppard - Hysteria

:D

It didn't take off for me though until I heard the Might Met...Master of Puppets, then Justice, and then the Black Album. I was hooked.

LOL, I think I was about 13/14 when I first heard Van Halen. After that it was KISS, Judas Priest, Rainbow. But it wasn't untill I heard Maiden that I really became a Metal-head.... I've learned about Symphony X on the Fates Warning Board. That was all she wrote.

My drummer son got into DT a few years ago. My wife found SymX and turned the family on to them. The first band that captured my attention was Uriah Heep (early 70s)....I still listen to them. They were ahead of their time. I was in front of the stage at the first show Sabbath played in the States when I was a teenager. There was no turning back after that.

My brothers listened to tallica alllll day long and owww I hated that kind of music so much! I was very mad because of that. That time I played classical music on the flute and I listened to pop music. When I found (my bro's told so) the drums sounds kinda cool as well I sold my flute and bought my drumkit. They told me to play tallica. Haha, 1 year later they regreted for that because I was totally into tallica and all! Some years later, so these days, I listen to Dream Theater, SX, Evergrey, Opeth and all :D

like ive said before.. i always listened to old metal, metallica, sabbath, pantera, but i wasnt really full on into metal then.. it was like.. yeah theyre cool.. but they didnt engulf my entire life.
Until only about 5 months ago now.. my friend at the time, showed me the song King Of Terrors. i was like.. OMG WHO IS THIS!!!!!!! so that was the start of a beautiful friendship between me and this style of music, and this is what made me become elitely into metal..

ProgMetalFan: lol...

Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin were also great influences to me.

Alice Cooper was kinda great, but for the life of me, I didn't know what he was thinking when he released "I Never Cried". Ditto with the Rob Halford days of Judas Priest.

Oh, this is emmbarrising. When I was 10 i was the biggest silverchair fanboy. I was obsesed, i wanted to be daniel Johns (which is not a good role model for a 10 year old, as you may know) then my teacher showed me P&W by Steve Vai, i was amazed, I then very quickly found Joe Satriani, and liked it more as it was more commercial and catchy. Then through the net i found DT. I was even more amazed, then through the net i found Yngwie and Rhasody and my power metal/neo-classical faze kicked in, i only listened that type of music for a cuople of mnths until i listened to Awake again. I though "Jeez, this is good, beter than the power metal. What was i thinking. Then i was into prog again and found SyX, and there more bands.

When the LoTR movie came out, and I started reading the books and getting into it, a friend of mine recommended I listen to Guardian's NiME and then I got into Guardian. It wasn't until Guardian and Symphony played in NY that I got into Symphony. My metal collection has just been spreading since then.. :)
