Is there a reason why I would get alerts (little red flag thing in the upper corner) for everything one particular friend posts? In other words, how do I stop it? I don't care what said person is having for lunch or what not but I'd still like to keep said friend for contact purposes.

Look on their page, where it says "friends" click on that, should have a tick box for "notifications" or something....

sounds like you added them to your 'close friends' or as i like to call them, 'close fiends'

go to their profile.

at the top, near their name, you'll see this drop down thing when you hover your mouse over 'friends'

unselect 'close friends'.

that should do it!

Or go to the left hand side to "close friends" and remove everyone on the list that you don't want alerts from whatever bullshit they post.
