Fates Warning Performance?

Amazing! Surprises included Nicolas van Dyk (Redemption) on keyboards, and "Ivory Gate of Dreams" as the encore. Ray's voice started the night out strong, but some of the later songs in the set were more ambitious, and IGoD was pretty rough in spots. Other than Ivory Gates, the setlist could have been Athens 2007, as near as I can recall. They played for 2 hours all told.

Oh, and they were phenomenal. I thought they stole the show, but I'm probably biased, having never heard any of the other acts before today. (I live in a cave, music-wise.)

Orphaned Land was interesting, as was Circus Maximus. Pagan's Mind seemed to have the crowd worked up the most, though.

It was incredible! They were spot on. Highlight of the weekend for this Fates fan. I'm on a handheld, otherwise I'd leave more. Any skeptisim should be put to bed. They all played great. Ray's vox were perfect, Bobby nailed the drums, Joey was energentic and perfect, Frank was solid as always, and Jim was the usual Jim - nothing but the best!

Strangely enough, in all these years I have never managed to actually see Fates live - I saw about a song and a half when they opened for Dream Theater and Queensryche because they went on half an hour before the posted times. That was it. This was really awesome - I loved hearing some of the Perfect Symmetry stuff, as that's where I first got into them.

It felt like 1992 down on the floor, though - almost entirely a sausagefest with only about four or five women!

I was one of those women--right up front on the rail! I swear I must have lost a gallon of sweat, but it was sooooo worth it! They played all the songs I was hoping for: One (which was the opener), Monument, Still Remains (one of my favorite songs by any band, ever... so beautiful), and even Island in the Stream, which I was hoping for but didn't think they would play.

During Monument, something landed on my arm... I was so into the song that I didn't realize at first. It was a Joey Vera pick, woohoo! He was great and very into it, and it was awesome to see Nick on keys (didn't recognize him at first with the shaved head!). Speaking of whom, the new Redemption CD is going in my car CD player as soon as I get home! :D

They were great...Songs 3 and 4 from APSOG were downright perfect..Ray and Jim are just amazing..Ray did lose his voice in a way about one hour into it but I chaulk it up to pure exhaustion from all of us rocking for 9 straight hours.. Great show

lunatic:kickass:

When you guys say his voice was perfect, do you mean he was hitting the appropriate high notes? Or just he sang well live. I know Ray's voice has changed and I was just curious as to how he was singing.
I'm sooo bummed I missed ProgPower this year. <go and cries in the corner>

He doesn't try to sing the recorded high notes. He just sang really well. If the songs were re-recorded with how he sings them now, they'd be just as good, but different, imo.

Exactly. Also, too much prog and not enough power. I was hoping for a more even mixture of prog/power a la Pagan's Mind. Oh well. They are still a very talented band.

Yeah, no. I take it you aren't real familiar with them. Fates practically invented prog metal. They were damn good. Ray wasn't as good as he was the first hour, but I don't think it was he was hitting as much as he was losing breath towards the end. You gotta realize these guys are the oldest by far on the bill.

Oh yeah, anyone know their setlist?
Probably slightly out of order:

Disconnected/One
Life in Still Water
Another Perfect Day
APSOG 3/4
The Eleventh Hour
Point of View
Island in the Stream
Still Remains
Through Different Eyes
APSOG 11
Nothing Left To Say
Monument

Encore:
The Ivory Gate of Dreams

Fates were absolutey fantastic. Ray's voice has changed and he's not 20 or 30 or 40? years old anymore. He's said he changed the way he sings and he can't/wont sing in the higher range anymore. The band was tight and did a great imo variety of 25+ years of prog metal. Awesome set.

Fucking incredible!!! This is the true prog headliner for ProgPower!!!

And by the way, all of you guys who left early and didn't see Fates, shame on you. Missed a truly amazing performance!!

No offense to the power metal people, but I think more so than the prog people, the power metallers are not as open minded. To be honest, you paid for the ticket and you might as well get your money's worth.
