Hard to pick one, but I went with Melodic Death. Seems the bands that have touched me the most since I was an early teened metal worshipper have been more on this side of the spectrum. It's just hard to pinpoint which aspect is more favorable, be it true or extreme metal :P.

I just love how limitless the metal world is to sub genres. You have death metal stars writing power metal albums, black metal demons performing like angels in experimental/technical/avante-garde prog, and of course the power of any vocalist that can induce a satan-esque roar in the midst of a heavenly powerful octave range. It's hard not to exclusively worship METAL when the style has so much to offer. I wonder who voted for "nu metal?" lol.

Great post, I agree...I actually made this thread in regard to seeing how we limit ourselves....

I am listening to Hollow right now and in the song Lies there is badass Banjo, so again I say WTF!!!

Beauty and the Beast and female lead vocal bands like Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation,After Forever ect ect
I always thought that Avant-Garde Metal was more in the vein of Ark and not necessarily Beauty and the Beast. Or, did you just want to put 2 genres together, so as to not have an overly complex/40 choice poll?

That's not a sub-genre of metal :P Nightwish is just symphonic power metal with vocal styles of the gothic genre, being a deep male voice with high pitched female voice.

Yeah, Nightwish and that stuff is definitely not what I consider Avant-Garde, more stuff like Arcturus.

Ok. To me Avant-Garde is supposed to be different, outside of the box, artsy if you will. Also, part of what Progressive used to mean. I wasn't sure if Avant-Garde (i.e. in Prog Metal - Ark, Prog Rock - King Crimson or Tool, Jazz Fusion - Bela Fleck & The Flecktones or Jaco Pastorius) used loosely, like Progressive is now. Not that any of this music, including the different Beauty & the Beast Metal types (i.e. After Forever, Epica, Within Temptation, Therion, etc...), we talk about isn't creative to some degree or another, but most of it, isn't outside of the norm. I'll have to check out Arcturus sometime.

Yeah, Beauty and The Beast and Avante-Gard are 2 different things.

Yeah well my poll sucks LOL, can't have a poll withut Thrash and Doom...Anyways being that only 9 people vited for that catagory anyways makes the point moot. The interesting this is that both Prog and Power have 47 each...Slit right down the middle....

Not any more. Prog Metal now has 48. I think the Power people are confused with their genre.:heh: Power is like Gamma Ray or Helloween, not Vanden Plas or Threshold. Heavy doesn't equal power. Heavy equals Metal, as in Prog Metal.

I went with prog, power, avant-garde, & melo death.
I have a tendency to prefer bands that don't stick to one style.
There's a fair amount of styles left out of this. But it's hard with so many subgenres that have really fully developed into their own style. I specifically notice symphonic (and no I don't mean intrumental) & folk metal missing.

I would have voted for both Avant-Garde and Beauty & the Beast separately anyways. Besides, don't sweat the poll. A lot of the complex polls here on the PPUSA forum, including one I made, are imperfect. We all have an excuse...too much drinking (among other things, for a lot of us, I'm sure :p ), in the past, killed some of our brain cells! :kickass:

Bear, I didn't vote ... My favorite genre is really a mix of the prog and power genre ... Progressive Power Metal. Evergrey, Vanden Plas, and Pagan's Mind are all bands that might fit that category. If I had to vote based on your choices I would go with Power Metal.

Ditto. Except I lean a little more towards prog, so I voted for that. :)

There was no separate category marked 'Marillion' though so I couldn't be perfectly accurate. :p
