One thing, I tend not to trigger toms, I'll always sample the kit when we've just stuck new heads on there, and use one of those hits if I need to replace anything.

Hmm. I'll try not to milk you too hard Andy, but you tend not to trigger toms? Well then I'm baffled. You dont run triggers from the toms and then replace them later? You mean the toms you always get are just gated, compressed and eq'd with an occasional hit replaced by the sample you make?

I think I'm in a different situation. I have to record these guys that play at 220-240 bpm and they dont have the time to hit the drums hard. So I'm stuck with sampling and am trying to find the best way to make the sample fit in there and not sound too fake like the Dimmu Borgir toms.

yeah, if its real fast stuff where they skip across the heads you'll have to replace some hits, but usually what you hear with me are gated, eq'd and compressed with the odd bad hit replaced.

Also I busted out the old DM5 and did some comparisons between those toms and the Ddrum toms that I have in my Ddrum 4 brain.

I use a DM5 sample for the low end on my kicks. I couldn't find a good high end sample with it...I'm using a mix of 2 kicks from my Yamaha Motif for the high end.
