First powerlifting meet yesterday...

I started real lifting in February of 2010 so about 16-17 months! Before that did some random at home bodyweight and dumbbell shit but nothing that really mattered.

Oh wow. I started in January of 2010. Brb killing myself.
Although I started as a twig (60kg/135lb at 6ft) and this whole year has been pretty shit for me as far as the gym goes (accutane set me waaaaaay back, then I injured my back in a stupid stunt, I'm only now starting to recover my strength).
What were you lifting when you first started?

Morgan if you are still 6 foot and 135 lbs you must start eating more. Not just for lifting weights. Just eat man. That body weight at 6 foot doesn't sound healthy. I am not just being an ass, totally serious.

Just looking through my old training log, it looks like I was doing worksets of 5-7 reps at these weights:

Squat 160
Bench 145
Deadlift 195

I had some base strength from lots of dumbbell stuff already but those are still pretty pathetic lifts and there are comments in there next to a set of 5 at 160 on the squat saying "REALLY FUCKING HARD!"

Kinda nice seeing those numbers, I can easily bench 145 for 30 reps now

Was 135lbs. I'm now around 150, 155 (lost a bit of weight on accutane). I'm an ectomorph, naturally skinny. I didn't starve myself, although I did and still do go for ages without food when I get caught up in something, be it mixing or programming or whatever, then realise at 5pm I haven't eaten yet. Doesn't help. But I have to eat way more than I want to gain any weight.
I'm definitely healthier now that I eat better and exercise, but I wouldn't say I was unhealthy (although, what 20 year old is 'unhealthy'?). I'd like to get up to about 80kg (180lbs?) at the same bodyfat I'm at now.

That's pretty good to start with. Before joint pain from accutane kicked in I was squatting 75kg atg (about 165lbs) and deadlifting 100kg (220lbs?), both for 5 reps, but my bench has always been absolutely horrid. I've got a chronic shoulder thing that I'm having to manage (I sound like a fucking vegetable with all this shit, but really the accutane joint pain is almost gone, my back injury from being a retard is healing well and should be stronger than ever in a couple of months) but even before then, like 90lbs was heavy for me. I don't think I'll get as strong as you are now (I wouldn't like to be that heavy for starters, which hinders progress), but I can try!

Shit bro don't put me off, my accutane course starts on the 24th and I swear to god my recovery rate is slow already

I agree it is a bit of a PITA getting all that food in - I'm having to cut at the moment because I piled on the pounds too heavy - 40lbs in like 4-5 months, and shot up to 170lbs at 5' 9" at about 16-17% bodyfat, dropping from like 4500 calories to eating 1800 calories a day is a fucking chore at the moment though, starving all the time.

Haha, you did the same as Harry then. My progress is slow but I've kept my abs the whole way, I'm probably around 10-11% atm.

Accutane hit me hard, much harder than it does most I think. I was on a fairly low dose, eventually going to 50mg a day. I can put you off if you want?
Dry skin, duh. This actually wasn't too bad. Buy some Bio-Oil. After a while, moisturiser doesn't cut it. This stuff is a godsend.
Dry lips. Not too bad. They looked pretty bad(ass). I had a big cut down my bottom lip right in the middle, I think it looked like warpaint but most people were pretty horrified at how bad my lips were. By the end it kept ripping open whenever I smiled or ate.
Dry eyes. I already have sensitive eyes, that coupled with working 40 hours a week in an air-con environment and accutane sucked balls. Near the end I couldn't really hold eye-contact, even while taking multiple eye drops a day.
Dry mucus. Unfortunately this one has stayed (maybe it'll go away eventually). I can't blow my nose anymore because it's all rocks.
Dry ear wax. I couldn't clean my ears without them bleeding. Lulz.
Dry dick. Fapping. Enough said.
Nosebleeds. Not too bad actually, but a few random ones here and there which were annoying.
Joint pain everywhere. Knees, elbows, shoulders, entire back. I think lifting helped (but it was depressing going each week and seeing your lifts go down and down, not even really stressing your major muscles), up until a point where I just had to take a couple of months completely off. It's still not completely gone, and I'm having to work my way up with high rep/low weight exercises. I did like 300 20kg squats the other week. Did 120 40kg deads a couple days ago.
Sun rashes. I burn before I tan anyway, but this was before burning. Don't go in the sun without sunscreen. This wasn't that bad tbh, I mostly stayed out of the sun.
No alcohol (or other drugs if you're into that). Spent New Years Eve sober. Wheeeeeee. I've actually only drunk once since I've come off it though. It's nice to be able to have a couple drinks if you want though.

I think that's about it. Did it suck? Hell yes. Do I regret it? No(t yet, maybe I'll get cancer or some shit).

Probably better to do a lean gain, but its nice to hear the compliments when you look big (apart from my dad, i had to move back home recently and I swear it's ; "Son, you're looking fat" every twenty minutes)

Don't think I'll have to worry about the sun at all, Scottish disposition means I haven't had a tan or burnt in years.

My dose isnt getting built up (not sure why) all I know is I'm going straight in at 70mg, so preparing for the worst, I did ask the derm about most of this shit (wearing contacts, lifting, drinking) and he basically said use at your own discretion and try not to overdo it, altho prepared to use glasses and not drink at all I really hope it doesn't kick too much shit out of me so I can still do the lifting. Glad to hear its worth it though, my skin is shit and I have a feeling I should have bugged the doctor for a dermatology referral years ago.

It's a medication for severe or cystic acne bro, if you have bad skin its pretty much the only thing that can guarantee you never have acne again (majority of people on it go into remission), but it does have a nasty list of side effects - most of what Morgan was mentioning is fairly commonplace, it basically dries the shit out of your skin and some people get minor muscle inflammations/joint difficulty whilst on it so it can have an effect on heavy lifting + it kicks the shit out of your liver so you can't drink.

It is prescribed by a doctor though so its not like we're talking about self dosing on something, you have to get liver function/blood tests done every 1-2 months in most cases.

Morgan 150 to 180 is right around what I was thinking sounded healthy for your height. I understand working intently on something and not eating, in school I worked on a long term project intently for 30 days straight every day and lost an absurd amount of body mass. To much work isn't healthy at all.

You and Owens bad skin sucks man. I had really bad acne from age 12 to 23. It sucked balls. Still have a little scar tissue at 32. My family didn't have much money, didn't always have health insurance or much access to information on such things. Eventually I just out grew it and my skin became much less oily. In fact too dry now.

Everyones body is different but here are some of the things other than time that I believe helped my acne go away. At 24 I joined the army and went to basic training. This meant lots of physical activity, drinking tons of water, no longer drinking cows milk (so I would not puke running), balanced meals, no booze or drugs and not being very clean due to time resrtraints during bathing.

This sounds retarded but I haven't washed my face with soap in years. Not unless I actually have big clumps of dirt on it. I just let it rinse off in the shower. The skin on my face is so light and fair that soap bugs the heck out of it. In fact if I use the wrong detergent on my clothes my legs have broken out in rashes in the past.

Yeah man I tried ridiculous amounts of shit to try rid myself of it - gave up drinking milk for a while and tried doing low GI diets/supplementation but it didnt really help, I gave up assuming it was anything diet related for me after lots of experimentation, I have always had a super healthy diet anyway and I started getting it heavy when I was 13 - two years before I actively ever started drinking.

I was doing alright for a few years but when I started lifting my skin was just turning to shit again despite the medication I was using so I decided it was time to do something about it because I didnt want to give up something I enjoyed doing for something that I have to endure. Exercise seems to make mine worse because I get a testosterone bump or something. On the drugs/alcohol thing - I barely drink anyway - maybe a pint or two when I'm out and I wont refuse the odd joint every few months but they've never been a big thing to me.

Anyway, fortunately we have the NHS here so all going well I can get it cleared up finally now that I'm in my 20's, I didn't want to be still plagued by the same problem for the rest of my adult life anyway.

P.S Sorry to Adam for hijacking your topic here slightly haha.

The whole fun thing about this sport is the technique aspect.
I joined a friend to the gym, who also powerlifts, and he told me to try it. Deadlifted 165kg, but using wrong technique.
When I tried it with the proper technique I couldn't go further than 125.

That's untrained tho.

Unless you are shorter than 5'10", I don't think anyone should strive for a weight less than 200lbs. And unless you can squat at least 300lbs, having visible abs only serves to make you look like a victim of emorexia! Haha...

The whole abs thing is unfortunate because so many people want visible abs even if they don't have any of the muscle mass required to be able to look healthy and have a six pack. I'd rather be 16% body fat and look like I can flip over a car than look like a holocaust victim.

So skinny dudes, don't be afraid of losing the 6 pack, gain some weight and get stronger, you'll look better and feel more confident even without the abs, I promise... You can always lose any extra fat gained later if it still matters to you but at least you can have abs and weigh 180+ instead of <150.

I agree with that. Seeing your abs doesn't mean poop. I new a guy that was in the service with me and he had a six pack but could not do 15 situps when he joined up. His abs were totally weak.

Working out to get stronger makes sense to me. Working out to look like some guy on a magazine cover is retarded.

After you get married you will not give a crap about your apearance anymore anyway.

Cool thread man! The Dave Tate so you think you can bench? series is fucking amazing as well, not just that one off video above. The "so you think you can squat?" with Matt Wenning is also incredible.

Nice lifts btw, your bench SMOKES mine. Your squat depth is also really decent, comfortably below parallel even by IPF standards.

I've never competed but I'd like to some time. I've squatted 185kg to decent depth in the gym, 192.5kg nearly to depth but I'm not sure it'd fly in any fed worth a shit. Bench, bleh - 110kg paused, not sure if it was long enough pause to be competition legal though. Deadlift 217.5kg but that was before I switched back to sumo; I've done a sumo double at 215kg and that was about a month ago (haven't been able to lift hard 'cuz of exams) so I'm hoping to knock that up to about 230kg next max session.

I'm actually getting more interested in the olympic lifts recently. Clean and jerk has gotta be one of the manliest things of all time - I'd love to be able to take double my bodyweight from the floor to locked out overhead. That's basically my very long term goal at the moment. I can't even rack cleans properly yet though so I've got a while to go heh.
