City beneath the surface
I really enjoy female vox fronting a metal band, especially dark/gothic sounding music. Aside from the obvious choices that we all discuss here on a regular basis, there are alot of bands I'm not familiar with. If you're a fan of any of the following bands, let me know their best discs to start off with, if they have multiple releases that is. Opinions about these bands are welcome as well. Thanks guys!

Stream of Passion
Mortal Love
Beseech
Tapping the Vein
Lullacry
Sirenia
Midnattsol
Lunatica
Elis
Xandria

Alexandria is in studio this week recording their first album. They are an unsigned act based north of Miami, and play clubs in the south Florida region on a semi-regular basis. I think out of many different prog/power/thrash bands with female lead vocals, Alexandria is a gem waiting to shine!

And the week of June 18th-22nd they will be traveling through cities in Florida on their way to Atlanta as I bring them here to play my fourth promotional on June 23rd at The 7 Venue.

:kickass:

And I do hope to see some locals there supporting them!

Stream of Passion - Embrace the Storm

10/10.

AMEN! That disc is awesome! Their live 2-disc set is amazing as well!

As for some of the others, edgeofthorns:
Lullacry - "Crucify My Heart"
Midnattsol - "Where Twilight Dwells" - I think that's the only album they have so far, but it's really good.
Lunatica - "Fables and Dreams" - I've also heard that "The Edge of Infinity" is good too
Elis - I only own "Dark Clouds In A Perfect Sky" and "God's Silence, Devil's Temptation" - both are good albums IMO
Xandria - "Ravenheart" - definatly my favorite album of theirs. "India" is another good one.

I love female fronted metal, but there's several bands on your list I haven't heard. I'll have to check out Mortal Love, Beseech, Tapping the Vein and Sirenia.

I thought I would point out my favorite specific disc from each band below to narrow down your search:

Regicide- Break the Silence- Male/Female vocals. Essential purchase!!
Listen: "The Hanger On" http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=43241743

Angtoria- God Has A Plan for Us All: One of the best releases of 2006, all genres.
Listen: "Hell Hath No Fury..." http://www.myspace.com/angtoriaofficial

Delain- Lucidity: Within Temptation style with guests such as Marco from Tarot/Nightwish
Listen: "The Gathering" http://www.myspace.com/delainmusic

Nemesea- Mana: One of the most underrated discs of this genre of all-time. The new one is pure pop shit.
Listen: "Angel in the Dark" http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=76458916

Delight- Eternity: I prefer the earlier stuff like this disc with the techno twist in small doses, but they still do this stuff with the best of them.
Listen: medley http://www.myspace.com/delightspace (flash mp3 player on left side of page, not standard player at top)

Lunatica- Fables & Dreams: The standard to which all Nightwish clones must be held. Awesome.
Listen: "A Little Moment of Desperation" or "The Spell"
http://www.myspace.com/lunaticametal

Aghora- Formless : Actual prog metal. Great stuff.
Listen: "Open Close the Book" http://www.myspace.com/aghora

Xandria- Ravenheart: A bit lighter than I like unless I'm in a total wuss mood.
Listen: medley http://www.xandria.de/english/index.html

Dakura- Shifting Realities- One of the best Beauty & the Beast releases of all time. I couldn't find any mp3s.

Oh yes. To reiterate Aghora. from Glenn's post. This band is simply superb. They are a must for anyone who enjoys great musicianship and just awesome prog/jazz/technical metal.

Mortal Love really didn't do much for me...

I find that Beseech's "Souls Highway" is excellent for what it is - a gothic metal album with atmosphere. I really enjoy it.

I'm hoping if you've heard of Sirenia, you're familiar with Mortan Velund's first band, Tristania. Their first two discs are a better incarnation of the sound, imo.

Xandria is okay, Elis has a few good songs (I haven't listened to Griefshire yet, which is supposed to be really good), and Edenbridge also has a few songs that you may like. Lullacry didn't do much for me either, too poppy I guess for my tastes. None though really excited me.

Draconian has female vocals in the beauty and beast style in a more doom-death approach. I loved one of their demos, "Dark Oceans We Cry," and have heard stellar things about the full-release "Arcane Rain Fell."

Also... try Diablo Swing Orchestra :D

Angtoria- God Has A Plan for Us All: One of the best releases of 2006, all genres.
Listen: "Hell Hath No Fury..." http://www.myspace.com/angtoriaofficial
Great pick, Glenn! That was one of my top three albums for 2006 (Benedictum's Uncreation was #1 and Doro's Warrior Soul was #2. All 3 are very awesome female-fronted metal IMO)

Edenbridge also has a few songs that you may like. Lullacry didn't do much for me either, too poppy I guess for my tastes.
I just recently got into Edenbridge and bought their album The Grand Design. I like it alot. It's melodic and I would say the vocal style is comparable to Floor of After Forever. (Some folks might argue with that, but to each their own.)
I'll agree, Lullacry is a little poppy and for that reason it actually took me a little while to get into them. The first time I gave it a listen the vocalist sounded like typical over-mixed pop female vocals. (At the time I was thinking Brittney Spears sings metal.) It caused me not to give the CD another listen for several months, but don't get dicouraged. Once I did give it another good listen I realized that I liked the melodies alot and the vocals grew on me. Their singer actually has a pretty nice voice.

Take note:

Moon Of Steel - "Insignificant Details"
Kurgan's Bane - "The Future Lies Broken" (there's a new one "Camouflaged In Static" but I hadn't check it yet)
Mastermind - "Angels Of The Apocalypse"
Benedictum - "Uncreation"
Stormwind - "Stargate"
Satanic Rites - "Which Way The Wind Blows" (oop, wish I can have it :( on CD)

and of course the usual suspects: Warlock/Doro, Acid, Stos, Zoetrope, Lana Lane, Zed Yago, Nightwish and even old Lacuna Coil and Within Temptation (if you want extreme go for Arch Enemy or Holy Moses :ill: )

NP: Zoser Mez - 'Sweet Tzantza'
