For those that hard clip your masters with converters...

Yeah the way I feel is...the digital headroom thing really might not even matter, but it's easy enough to leave a bit of room anyway, so I'll probably just keep doing it.

I finally got my problem solved out. I set my analog setup (Tube desk, SSL comp & Neve EQ) as an external insert in my DAW, so now, once it comes back to the daw I put my Slate FGx with just 2db on the limiter and I can reach -8.5RMS sounding pretty good.
You guys leave like 2-3db of your loudness to be pushed to you limiters, or just pushed the AD hard until you get you ideal loudness??

most of the time I am going between 0 to 2 dB.

again: are the FF800 converters good enough for this or should I keep ITB clipping for the moment?

Gotta try it and find out!

I tried with my Firestudio, and although the results are slightly better than what I usually achieve, it's hardly worth it. I'm sure your converters in the RME are better though, so give it a try.

Just try it rather than asking. You'd probably get some crackling from your FF800 though. Most interfaces won't have great conversion. To get the most from clipping AD converters, you need to be doing it with Burl, Lavry, Apogee, Prism etc.

I could swear there was someone on here that tried clipping the converters in their 002 and liked the results, so I'd say don't write off your converters as being "not good enough" until you try them out.

Try it. You decide if it is good enough for you. I am so used to the Burl being the converter I clip that everything else sounds bad to me though now.
