TOPS:
Dantesco - De La Mano De La Muerte
Manilla Road - Gates of Fire
Isole - Forevermore
Thee Plague of Gentlemen - Primula Pestis
Confessor - Unraveled
Against Nature - Panoply & Appease
YOB - The Unreal Never Lived
Centurions Ghost - A Sign of Things To Come
Reverend Bizarre - Crush the Insects
Jotenheim - Jotenheim
Madking Ludwig - Madking Ludwig
Fuck me, I've somehow missed the Manilla Road entirely.
OK, interesting list. I especially like the fact that I haven't even heard of 6 of those bands. What do I need as a priority? Just point me in the right direction....
AWAITING:
Hammers of Misfortune (please?!)
At this rate, it's not looking like an '05 release. No publicity for it whatsoever.
OK here's what I've got thus far, in no order (scoring 8.5 or 9/10):
Slough Feg - Atavism
Primordial - Gathering Wilderness
Witchcraft - Firewood
Moonsorrow - Verisakeet
Rudra - Bhramavidya
Jury's still out on these:
Biomechanical
Bruce Dickinson
Ackercocke
Graveland
Grand Magus
Allen-Lande
Thyrfing
Naglfar
Vreid (probably a sleeper hit)
Fallen off the radar (floating around 6/10, some good tracks, some blah):
-Novembers Doom (if I want me some ND, I reach for "The Knowing")
-Nokturnal Mortum (I liked "Taste of Victory" without the interruptions)
-Drudkh (oh christ no, if this were anyone else it would have been ignored)
-Opeth (nice try but no cigar -- the fact is, Deliverance was better)
-Helloween (reminding me of how much I dread the sequel to Mindcrime)
-Hypocrisy (boring as heck)
-Candlemass (average at best)
-Kreator (surely THE disappointment of the year, considering the enormity of Violent Revolution)
-Dark Tranquility (not bad, but haven't listened to it since I reviewed it and gave it a 7/10, so now I'd say it's a 6)
Guilty Pleasures (a few tracks I like to crank, but the album would never make the list):
-Nile (it's their weakest yet, but it's a polished gem of death metal nevertheless)
-Gamma Ray (obviously, when it comes to Eurovision Song Contestants, these are the gods of singalong anthems, next to ABBA of course)
-Nevermore (containing one of the best songs of the year no doubt)
-Yngwie Malmsteen (well, it's his best in years that's for sure)
-Judas Priest ('cos it's Priest!!!)
I really wanted to include the new Pelican but I can't honestly say it's better than Australasia, so it's not going to make the cut. It's also one of those albums that I might enjoy in a year from now, when it all suddenly 'clicks'.
No 10/10 albums so far this year.
