probably 90% of the people on this board are interested in optimizing the loudness of their mix without the help of an external mastering house and "mastering" it themselves.
That's what I was referring to. Even for DIY, I think looking at it as two separate processes can be advantageous and yield much better results.
I realize there are no rules and there are many ways to skin a cat (sorry pita) but I feel that clipping/limiting or trying to maximize for loudness while still in the mix stage is like trying to put icing on a cake while it's still in the oven... trying to frame a picture while the paints still wet.
Mixing the song as you want to hear the song/s > bounce/render mix > import into a separate session set up for mastering... different mind set.
I'm not campaigning to send stuff out as much as offering 2 cents to get better results from a home rig... been there.
