Gamers Thread

The smart thing to do with consoles is to wait 1-2 years before getting the current generation so that the price drops, and there's a decent library of games. It would have been dumb to buy PS3 when it first came out and cost $600 and had no games. Six months from now, it'll probably be $350-375 and have a fair amount of games, some of which can be obtained cheaply used. Have fun getting used PC games.

Did this for my 360. Got a bunch of games cheap used and no red ring (yet). Definately the way to go!

My co-worker ran right out and bought the 360. He's on his 4th console as we speak.

Yes, but if you want to play new games (which is what I though we were talking about) you need to upgrade your computer more often the a console, I can't see how there is any arguing in this really. The PS2 was released 2000 and there are still games comming for it. At that time Geforce 2 was the top of the line graphic card, I've still got it, good luck running any newer games on it.

And you can chip your console and download endless number of games for your console too. :)

BTW: most people don't buy new TVs or new Screens everytime they upgrade, so you pretty much prove yourself with your numbers that you are wrong? :p

The thing is though, the graphics on a computer can be scaled to fit the strong points or limitations of a computer system. Console graphics stay basically the same throughout it's whole life, can't get any better, can't get any worse.

Besides, the custom (free) content being produced for computer games increases the replay value of the games you get.

Yeah I definitly agree with this, one of computer gamings strongest point, though with every new console having internet connection I wouldn't be suprised if we will see this on consoles too. I also think that computers and consoles works well in different areas. FPS and RTS are just so much better on computers while games like Super Smash Bros, MGS, jrpgs, and most adventure games and multiplayer games you don't play over the internet works better on consoles. So it is pretty much up to what kind of games you are into. :)

From where out of your ass are you pulling $2-3,000 dollars for a TV from? You can get a very nice, big-but-not-huge TV for around $800. Assuming you don't already have one. And you mention all the additional things a PC does while neglecting the value of a nice TV for movies and television.
Still more than a PC monitor, but whatever. Fine.

Also, consoles have a lifespan of around 5 years. There is no way a PC runs new games for 5 years without significant upgrades.
Not for 5 years, but on the other hand, the graphics on console games make a significant leap every 5 years and then creep slowly until they come to the limit of the system. PC graphics improve really fast. Also, there are tons of PC games being made, so you can spend 5 years playing just some of the games made in one year.
Have fun getting used PC games.
Well, I would, since it isn't very hard, except that I think I'll have more fun downloading whatever games I want.

Not really, since most people don't upgrade their monitors either. A home made gaming pc is comparable pricewise to a new console, but has far, far more functionality.

Yes that's what I said, "new tv or screen". In your example though the computer was almost twice the price of the console even without the screen, so I wouldn't say it is comparable really. :)

Yes but if you buy a new end gaming station you do it only for the games, because most likely your old computer will hold for the other stuff (if you don't render huge ass stuff in maya or something which most people don't). Besides, you can't watch blu-ray movies. ;D

Oh well. I don't even know why I am debating this so much anyway, I rarely play either console or computer games at all nowdays anyway.
