I forget a lot of styles I do know, but I don't fucking care.

i dont think you can really put a band under one genre. you have to put the generes under the bands. like bodom is like a combination of melodic classical, black, thrash and whatnot. nightwish would be like melodic symphonic, power metal or something. and i think some good classically influenced metal is bodoms something wild, hatebreeder and warmen.

oh ya, and then there is nu metal which would be like all gay bands that sound like korn. i dont think its actually metal though. its like a koala bear...its not really a bear.

Death Metal - The Haunted, Nightrage, Vader, Hypocrisy
Thrash Metal - (old) Metallica, Megadeth, Testament, Slayer
Progressive Metal - Opeth, Dream Theater, G3
Black Metal - Immortal, Dimmu Borgir, Naglfar
Melodic Death Metal - Children of Bodom, In Flames, Skyfire, Norther, Kalmah
Hardcore Metal - Shadows Fall, Lamb of God, Unearth, Killswitch Engage
Heavy Metal - Pantera, Black Label Society, Ozzy Osbourne
Power Metal - Manowar, Helloween, Sonata Arctica
Classic Metal - Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest

I think In Flames and Nightrage are Melodic Death metal, at least they used to be. In Flames are, nowadays, nu metal shit
Hmm I kinda think Nightrage leans more towards Thrash, at least instrumentally. In Flames have never really been Death Metal to me, it feels more like Heavy Metal with harsh vocs. But IF nowadays is pure shite, you're definitely head on with that point. But its all about definition.

@bloody_trooper: Nightrage do have some keys/synth on those sucky songs where the Evergrey guy comes in and screws it up. I'm happy that at least they skip em on the good songs (The Tremor, Macabre Apparition, The Glow... etc)

Megadeth is thrash metal?!?!?!

when did i miss that. They certainly don't sound thrash, how bout Classic metal?

Where does Dio, Rainbow, and motorhead fit into all this.

Melodic Death Metal - Arch Enemy, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity
Brutal/Technical Death Metal - Suffocation, Decapitated, Cryptopsy, Dying Fetus
Plain old Death Metal - Death, Carcass
Black Metal - Emperor, Darkthrone, Immortal
Progressive Metal - Dream Theater, Zero Hour, Sun Caged, Symphony X (to a certain extent, with some power metal in there), Spiral Architect
Power Metal - Iced Earth, Helloween, Edguy
Thrash Metal - Exhorder(this band rules), Anthrax, Annihilator
Viking Metal - Vintersorg, Thyrfing, Finntroll (POLKA!)
Doom Metal - My Dying Bride, Moonspell.. don't know much about this genre
Shred - Yngwie Malmsteen, Impellitterri (spelling?), Jason Becker
Heavy Metal - Iron Maiden, Judas Priest

Bodom have a genre of their own..

Yes, they are. OK, not 100%, they're one of The Four Horsemen, four bands that used to play (and created) American Thrash Metal, they were Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax and Slayer.

American Thrash Metal is similar to Speed Metal.

(referring to Blind Guardian)haha, you're right. Blind guardian is awesome. I think they have a genre of their own as well.
I don't think so. I had listened for four years to Blind Guardian until I quit listening to them last year. I can say that their style is somme mix of Pretty Maids and the very first Savatage. Although their first two albums are a bit thrashy they did not create any genre.

what would dimmu borgir be.

and what about Symphonic metal, Bitch metal, and stoner metal.
