GMD Poll: Top 10 Metal Albums of 1986

1. Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
2. Queensrÿche - Rage for Order
3. Destruction - Eternal Devastation
4. Metallica - Master of Puppets
5. Megadeth - Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
6. Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
7. Sacred Blade - Of the Sun + Moon
8. Iron Maiden - Somewhere in Time
9. Messiah - Hymn to Abramelin
10. Griffin - Protectors of the Lair

Something like that. Top 3 is pretty steady, 4-5 rotate frequently, 6-7 was a toss-up, Maiden's kinda feels too high but I can't deny the peaks on that one, and the last couple had to duke it out with a dozen contenders.

1. Détente - Recognize No Autority
2. Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
3. Fates Warning - Awaken The Guardian
4. Sacred Blade - Of the Sun and Moon
5. Metallica - Master of Puppets
6. Helstar - Remnants of War
7. Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?
8. Flotsam & Jetsam - Doomsday for the Deceiver
9. Nuclear Assault - Game Over
10. Saint Vitus - Born Too Late

1. Metallica - Master of Puppets
2. Dark Angel - Darkness Descends
3. Megadeth - Peace Sells...
4. Yngwie Malmsteen - Trilogy
5. Destruction - Eternal Devastation
6. Kreator - Pleasure to Kill
7. Slayer - Reign in Blood
8. Nuclear Assault - Game Over
9. Exumer - Possessed by Fire
10. Warhead - The Day After

This was like the peak year for unadulterated, balls to the wall pure thrash. After this year tech thrash and death started to more cleanly split into two subgenres. But if you listen to some of these albums in 1986 you can hear the beginnings of both tech thrash and death still raw and combined into one badass package.

Also people need to check out that Warhead album, one of the better speed metal albums of all time imo.

HM: Deathrow - Riders of Doom

I avoided it for a long time because I heard it was generic speed/thrash metal, and didn't want to feel let down with how much I enjoy the S/T, and the first couple listens I didn't like it, but I had to include it because it's been the most steady grower for me of the last year.

I actually got it immediately and since then it's surpassed the debut for me.

The Rateyourmusic list fucked up The Strongest Power by Leviticus, which came out in 1985 but they included them due to a 1986 reissue.

They would be in my list if so.

Also, are we limited to just heavy metal/thrash picks?
