GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1998

Can the both of you just shut up?
Bitch were you not arguing with her/yourself just a few pages back?

@MetalAges You know, just something to keep in consideration.
You cant possibly be this much of a faggot can you? Wow.

You would need to ban both of them for that to happen tbh

Your life goals.

No don't ban anybody, this forum seems dead enough lately.
No one's getting banned for that shit. Talos is just being a raging cunt right now.

Even though most of my loyal in-crowd subjects think that Deathcult is an 11/10 flawless masterpiece, I consider it about a 9/10 album and think that they overrate it. So since I only think that Obscura is an 8/10 album, it stands to reason that I probably love Deathcult more.

I hope that you're being willfully disingenuous, since this has been thoroughly explained many times already.
Thanks for the thorough and concise explanation. Now we can move on.

I'm choosing to toe the line and reply because TB needs to find someone to disagree with. I haven't really done anything against the rules here, and I don't think that TB is quite there yet either. He should probably stop looking for fights though.

you cant not reply. Its what you do. And lol @ you thinking this was some kind of fight or something. Shows where both of our mindsets are at.

And we were talking about albums from this thread anyway. Dont know why talos thinks he can play moderator today.

You willfully chose to accuse me of lying about liking The Chasm without any real basis to do so, in order to have a reason to argue with me. That sounds like you're looking for a fight. You can disagree in regards to your intention, but that is some pathetic behavior.

What about this though? It clearly says 1998 on the actual tape.
I already mentioned the '1998' on the release in my post. Supposing the multiple sources saying released Jan. '99 are correct, then when was the artwork sent to the printers? And what copyright year do you think they'd put on said artwork? Bands don't usually overthink things to the level of worrying about what dates their fans will be arguing about 17 years in the future.

I contribute to a music website that likes examining things to that detail so I've gone full autistard on this stuff!

As of now in this 1998 game, The Chasm has been included in 9 lists, Morbid Angel in 8 lists.

The Chasm received 5 first place spots, 1 second place spot, 1 sixth place spot and 2 eighth place spots.

Morbid Angel received 2 fourth place spots, 1 seventh place spot, 1 eighth place spot, 2 ninth place spots and 2 tenth place spots.

So Formulas Fatal to the Flesh has been listed less and given worse spots on lists overall compared to The Chasm, I'd hardly call it overrated.

1998 is definitely one of my favourite years, but there’s still a clear number one for me. I’ve also really come to appreciate the Dawn record in recent times more than ever before and now consider it a flawed masterpiece. “The Knell and the World” isn’t even a top 3 track from it imo!

What are your favorite songs on it? I'm loving the shit out of "Ride the Wings of Pestilence".

Judging by the amount of Chasm selections this year (or any year) surely they deserve the award? Also fyi even though it's in your honourable mentions, Mocking the Philanthropist is a 1997 album.

I am not a Chasm fanboy. Procession... and Farseeing... didn't even make my 2000 or 2009 lists. But Deathcult for Eternity is a legitimately excellent work that creates an environment all its own. I can't think of another death metal album that has the atmosphere DFE has. If anything, it's underrated elsewhere and getting the acknowledgement it deserves here. On the other hand, Formulas Fatal to the Flesh is a fairly run-of-the-mill death metal album that if anything, is on the dry side. I definitely think it's getting a boost because of band-name recognition.

And thanks for the heads up on GBK.

“Malediction Murder”, “Falcula” and “The Aphelion Deserts” are my current faves. “The Knell and the World” has all but lost the impact it used to have for me. I don’t find its melodies as expressive or engaging as most of the other songs.

The album definitely does suffer from having too many songs that are strectched out for too long, but that’s become less of a problem for me as of late.

I dunno, views like this one seem genuine and not based simply on waving the flag of Morbid Angel for its own sake:
Get rid of the last three useless songs and Formulas Fatal to the Flesh is easily one of Morbid Angel's best. Trey's writing is insane and adventurous, and probably exactly what death metal needed from one of the genre's stalwarts in 1998. Nothing is Not, Chambers of Dis, Covenant of Death and Invocation of the Continual One are some of the finest songs in their discography.

Yeah, I think that I'd be considered among the last to recognize a Morbid Angel album in the top ten through band name recognition alone. Formulas has some of Trey's best and most ambitious writing which easily makes it a standout release in their discography and a standout release of the year given how well-executed it is. It's a shame the band never got this good again afterwards

Also, Necros is spot on with those track selections.
