GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1998

You said you dont worship them, but you like them .. but not to the degree of other posters here. You never said you loved them. And i would be having this beautifully autistic conversation with you regardless of which bands were in question.

Ok fine you love Obscura, but not as much as you love Deathcult. Happy?

Why do you care? I want a thorough and concise explanation.

1. Opeth- My Arm Your Hearse
2. Nargaroth- Herbstleyd
3. Nightwish- Oceanborn
4. Tristania- Widow's Weed
5. Labyrinth- Return to Heaven Denied
6. The Chasm- Deathcult for Eternity: The Triumph
7. Rhapsody- Symphony of Enchanted Lands
8. Blind Guardian- Nightfall in Middle Earth
9. Gorguts- Obscura
10. Incantation- Diabolical Conquest

-Phenomenal year. Every album in my top 10 is an A or an A-.
-50% of the list is power metal. Possibly the strongest year for power metal ever.
-Obscura would have ranked 5 if it wasn't for "Clouded". That song is total drain the middle of an otherwise fantastic album.

Honorable Mentions:
Edguy- Vain Glory Oprea
Stratovarius- Destiny
Nile- Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka
Grand Belial's Key- Mocking the Philanthropist
Running Wild- The Rivalry
Judas Iscariot- Distant in Solitary Night

The Venom Award (aka The Most Overrated Album of the Year Award):
Morbid Angel- Formulas Fatal to the Flesh

Decided to fly the power and prog metal flags as well. It was a sensational year with some other standouts that have held up surprisingly well like Pathos and Droÿs. I couldn't justify keeping The Chasm in this year. A lot of much better albums outclassed Deathcult and I've grown to prefer the other albums from the band to it.

@crimsonfloyd Also, put Symphony X on your list since this was one of power metal's best years.

whoops, order:

1. Arcane Sun
2. Lead and Aether
3. Rapture
4. My Arms your hearst
5. Moontower (if we are still counting it as '98- what say you wainds)
6. A journey's end
7. And so the night became
8. Supreme immortal art
9. Nightfall in middle earth
10. New dark age

AllMusic got it wrong apparently and that made it to Wikipedia and RYM. To make matters more confusing, if you click the cover art on Swano's page above "Dan Swanö / 1998 / Moontower", you're provided an image caption: "Dan Swanö - 1999 - Moontower".

He doesn't care. That's why he spent multiple pages trying to convince me that I was lying when nothing about my statement was contradictory, before finally posting exactly the sentiment that I was stating during the argument that he started despite not caring about what I say.
