GMD Poll: Top Ten Albums of 1998

Hey @Oblivious Maximus I dunno if you do these year games or whether you plan to do this year at least, but I was wondering if you'd checked out Nightstick ever? Very cool, acid-fried sludge/doom/noise band. Granted this isn't imo their best album but still a megabeast of the sludge genre for this year, along with Buzzov-en's At a Loss and Grief's Torso.

That Wind of the Black Mountains is 1996 according to MA.

You’re one of the very few people I’ve seen even mention them! Pretty cool band.

Yeah, a MA mistake. It was recorded in 1996 but not actually released until 1998.

See at the bottom:

Really fucking cool and weird album, actually one of the first 'obscure metal album' discoveries I made on my own when I was a young greenhorn twat starting to use forums back in 2004/2005.

4. Solitude Aeturnus - Adagio

Sucks not seeing this on more lists, I fucking love Adagio. :kickass:

Oh yeah, Nightstick are legendary out here in MA. Incredible live band and not just because of the dancing clown. Death to Music is probably my favorite but Ultimatum is indeed a megabeast as you put it. The reunion album Rock + Roll Weymouth is great too.

Death metal is the favorite genre of music of many people on this forum. Many people identify Morbid Angel deeply with the genre of death metal; they’re probably neck and neck with Death as being most synonymous with the genre. Therefore, people may have added subconscious incentive to protect a band that has a demigod status within the depths of their psyche.

Again, why is this album the only one that benefits from this subconscious need to protect the band? This is a pretty flawed line of reasoning when the obvious answer is, well, obvious.

Spoilers: The obvious answer is that people just like the album. Your personal lack of enthusiasm about it doesn't mean that other people who don't share your opinion only like it because of a subconscious need to enjoy it. That's illogical bullshit and even you probably know that.

I don't consider the in-crowd phenomenon to be an ulterior motive in the sense that it's a conscious conspiracy of taste, just that it's a fairly typical social quirk that most non-autistic humans have.

Does that make my in-crowd status an outlier then? I shouldn't have to explain why I'm asking this question.

Maybe that's why I can rank The Chasm lower than #1 in years where they release an album.

It’s not illogical at all. I believe “weak” is the word you’re looking for.

Nope. It's illogical to ignore the obviously more likely concept that people like an album in favor of claiming that they have a subconscious need to defend the band's later output by choosing to say they like the album.

To say something is illogical is to say that I have violated the principles of logic. I didn’t.

As for the “maybe they just like it possibility, I acknowledged that when I said “or maybe they just have less than stellar taste.” All grounds covered my friend.

You do actually, but since you're autistic I realize that the subtleties of productive conversation can be difficult.

No, I really don't because you posted the exact reason for me, just as I knew you would. Bonus points for demonstrating the point you were trying to make at the same time.

I can see all that HR conflict-mediator training is paying for itself.

Wow, I'm surprised that you remember that. Not really though since you would.

Anyway, I try to avoid making fun of your autistic tendencies since I have some overlap with you, but that one was almost like wearing a "Kick Me" sign.

Damn, you've seen them live?

label bandcamp has em at 96 if you care

I noticed that, they can suck my balls I have the CD and it says 1998 on it and the 1998 pressings are the only copies that exist so I'm going to assume it's the date it was completed, not released.

Oh really? I find that to be strange because Solitude Aeturnus are consistent in quality and in style. It's not like Adagio differs wildly from any of their other albums, albeit a more refined and powerful version of their previous albums' styles. Great production too, insanely booming especially if played on a good system.
